SUMMARY:Taboo and Heroes
DESCRIPTION:Taboo and Heroes \npresented by Kiandanda Dance \nSaturday\, September 27\, 8:00PM \nZaccho Dance Theatre\, 1777 Yosemite Avenue\, #330\, San Francisco \n$15 \nhttp://www.sfiaf.org/taboo_and_heroes \nhttp://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/809139 \nhttp://www.zaccho.org \n  \n“Taboo and Heroes explores the situation of the wars that struck the Republic of Congo in the late 1990s in a multimedia performance\, featuring modern and traditional dance\, interactive video design\, and live contemporary music. Taboo and Heroes addresses the reality and consequences of violence and corruption through the specific experiences of Byb Chanel Bibene. Bringing together dance and theater performers\, an original music score\, set design and video elements\, the piece aims to transport the audience into the charged atmosphere of conflict that permeated\, and still echoes in everyday life in the Republic of Congo. This piece transposes the Congolese environment on stage. \n  \nExploring the subject of victims of war and the lack of freedom of expression due to irresponsible dictatorial powers and the neo-colonial influences of western powers\, choreographer Bibene\, as a survivor of the Congolese war\, intends to demonstrate the essence of these dramatic situations of war\, which are lived by thousands of people throughout the world. This project is intended to lead people to pay more attention to what is going on in the world\, because a collective effort can help find solutions and lead to a better life not only in Africa but also in the rest of the world\, ecologically\, socially\, politically\, and humanly.\nFrom my questioning of the sources and implications of conflicts came the impetus to create a performance work that could inspire active consideration of current events\, in the belief that this is another step towards collective solutions to global problems. This work is intended to be a mobile\, internationally viable project that can widely communicate its political initiative through the explanatory power of its emotional and kinetic journeys. This project is furthermore a turning point in my career as choreographer: it is an extensive\, long-term undertaking\, employing new creative approaches in my choreography and socio-political purpose. The fruition of this project will allow Kiandanda Dance Theater to establish itself significantly in its new home in San Francisco.”

SUMMARY:What River Are You Made Of? Tuolumne Inside Out
DESCRIPTION:What River Are You Made Of? Tuolumne Inside Out \nopening gala reception Thursday\, September 11\, 6:30-9:00PM \nexhibit runs September 3-October 3 \nCapital One 360 Cafe\, 101 Post Street\, San Francisco \nFree \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1459348130995345 \nhttp://www.whollyh2o.org/services/standing-with-the-watershed/whatriverareyoumadeof.html \nhttp://cafes.capitalone360.com/san_francisco \n  \n“This show brings you 20+ artists’ interpretations of our Tuolumne River\, as well as the 411 on the river itself. The artists weave a story about the Tuolumne on the molecular\, infrastructure\, and end use levels through their 2D\, 3D\, digital\, and mixed media artwork. \n  \nWhile the Tuolumne River flows out of the tall peaks of the Sierra Nevada straight to the faucets of three million water users in the San Francisco Bay Area\, many don’t know its name and relation to them. The Tuolumne River provides both water and electricity to Turlock\, Modesto\, and the San Francisco Bay Area. \n  \nWhat else lies hidden from our consciousness about this stunning river as it flows below Bay Area urban neighborhoods\, enters our bodies\, passes on into the landscape or sewers? What ripples does this river make below us\, around us and inside of us? How does this river move through the Bay Area? How are we using it? And what does this life force need from us\, to be purely available to us? \n  \nCome to the September 11\, 6:30-9:00PM Show Opening for an inspired education on the origin of the water most of your body is made of – stay for the live music\, refreshments\, and company of most excellent people.\nDr. Elizabeth Dougherty\, Founder and Director of Wholly H2O\, curates this show.”
