SUMMARY:Hand Dipping Beeswax Candle Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Hand Dipping Beeswax Candle Workshop \nwith Hannah Vainstein \nThursday\, November 20\, 7:00-9:00PM \nGravel and Gold\, 3266 21st Street San Francisco\, 415-552-0112 \n$75 includes materials \nPlease pre-register at tomra@gravelandgold.com or 415-552-0112 \nhttp://gravelandgold.com/events/hand-dipping-beeswax-candle-workshop \nhttp://www.thelowerlodge.com/LODGE.html \n  \n“The Meditation of Candle Making \n  \nAs the Winter Solstice approaches\, I like to dip beeswax candles\, bringing light and warmth into the darker months.  The art of dipping beeswax candles is slow and rhythmic\, first in wax and then water.  During this slow meditative practice\, you can imbue your candles with intentions\, magic\, and gratitude (especially as Thanksgiving approaches) so that when they burn they release that energy into the universe.  Burning beeswax candles is said to have healing properties by producing negative ions\, purifying the air\, and improving one’s health\, energy\, and mood. Experiential more than informational\, in this two hour class you will learn how to dip candles with everyday materials such as tin can double burners\, raw wick\, and beeswax. You will practice the art of dipping by making a little pair of candles so you can learn the technique\, and after becoming familiar with the nature of the material you will be free to dip to your heart’s content. \n  \nHannah Vainstein founded The Lower Lodge : Artist Salon\, Studio\, and Boutique which is in Santa Barbara\, California. The LL hosts\, promotes\, and participates in cultural events with the aim of fostering a local and global creative community. The LL is an outlet of seasonal making with an emphasis of an integrated and sustainable lifestyle. Hannah Vainstein studied at an intensive arts and crafts college in England before attending The Slade School of Fine Art in London. She returned home to California to finish her arts education but her experiences in England continue to inspire her and informed the creation of The Lower Lodge.”

The simple acts of stirring tea or cooking food become mindful\, elevated experiences. In this workshop learn the process of designing\, carving\, and finishing techniques. Windy will demo hands-on use of a gouge\, Japanese handsaw\, Japanese rasp\, chisel/mallet\, and cabinet scrapers to create a one of a kind cherry wood spoon. \n  \nStudents will leave with a finished hand carved cherry wood spoon\, gouge for future spoon making\, sandpaper\, and oil. \n  \nLight snacks and drinks will be served. Due to the length of the workshop\, please bring a bagged lunch to enjoy at the studio or the nearby community garden.\nWindy Chien\, recovering techie and ex-record shop owner\, has developed a singular process for carving her Fat Bottomed Girls line of spoons. Using Japanese and Swiss hand tools and working in walnut\, cherry\, and mahogany\, she ergonomically designed the spoons to feel good in the hand and be used daily. While many methods for spoon carving exist\, Windy’s style is accessible to non-professionals without access to a woodshop and requires only a small amount of space and tools.”

RCF was the first event of its kind when it was founded in 2003\, and 11 years later we are still the largest and most far-reaching with 11 annual events in Austin\, Brooklyn\, Chicago\, London\, Los Angeles\, and San Francisco. On average\, our events are attended by over 250\,000 people annually\, and hundreds of craft-based businesses have been launched successfully out of the fairs. \nRCF was founded for a very simple reason: there simply wasn’t a curated\, well-run event for DIY-ers. After launching the first Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago in the fall of 2003\, the DIY craft fair concept took off immediately has since spread to the major network of events that it is today. We are constantly on the lookout for bright new talent\, and couldn’t be more proud of our reputation as a resource for advancing independent artisan and craft businesses. \nEverything at the fairs reflects our commitment to showcase the best and brightest in indie craft and design. This begins with our vendors\, featuring products ranging from cutting-edge fashion and jewelry design to sophisticated ceramics and housewares\, contemporary furniture and lighting\, bath and body products\, screen-printed art\, paper goods\, and more. \nBeyond our vendors\, you will find local artisanal food and drink\, original art installations created just for the fair by hand-selected artists\, interactive workshops\, great music\, good vibes and more. \nThe Renegade Craft Fair San Francisco November Market returns to the Fort Mason Center Festival Pavillion this November 8-9 to kick off our Fall/Winter Season of events.  Situated between the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz\, the scenic San Francisco Bay will provide a perfect backdrop to the stunning work of some of the most talented makers out there.   Market hours are from 11:00AM-6:00PM both days. \nRCF is always free to attend. It follows the life of a cozy family of gnome-like people and all the good things they enjoy as they live in harmony with their world. The the tale grew organically out of making the dolls and their forest home in my studio. \nMusic is an important part of my life\, and it’s part of the Stumpers’ world too\, so it was such a treat to include an original song in the e-book version of The Stumpers. The Stumpers’ Frolic is played by the talented Laura Cortese\, who also narrates the e-book. As an added treat\, Laura will be at the launch party\, where she and I will chat about creativity\, making art\, and working together on this project. \nThe Stumpers is my sixth book with Dromedary Press\, a publishing company I started with the goal of making beautiful books exactly the way I envisioned them. No one\, whether they’re an independent or one of the big houses\, knows what the future holds for book publishing\, but one thing that’s clear to me is that great things are possible when we work together. If you enjoy The Stumpers\, my wish is that you’ll spread the word by sharing it with your friends\, both in person and online. \nGnomevember starts a grand season of merrymaking. I hope you’ll join me to celebrate The Stumpers and its themes of togetherness\, joy\, song\, and dreams made real. Bring a friend! \n  \n5:30PM: Autumnal feast with warming cider \n6:00PM: Fireside chat with Karima Cammell and Laura Cortese \n6:30PM: Book signing and live music \n  \nA special a free gift with purchase of The Stumpers at the event! \nWhether or not you can make it to the party\, I invite you to visit The Stumpers website\, where you can not only order the book and some magical moving postcards\, but also send your friends an email greeting straight from the Stumpers themselves!”

SUMMARY:Woodland Egg Ornaments
DESCRIPTION:Woodland Egg Ornaments \nwith Tiffanie Turner \nSunday\, November 9\, 10:30AM-1:30PM \nHandcraft Studio School\, 5885 Doyle Street\, Emeryville\, 510-332-6101 \n$70\, limit 20 students \nhttp://www.handcraftstudioschool.com/workshops/woodland-eggs-119 \nhttp://www.papelsf.com \n  \n“Using blown-out chicken eggs and gorgeous Italian floral crepe paper\, Tiffanie will guide you through the process of making beautiful and memorable woodland ornaments resembling acorns and pine cones. You will make and acorn ornament that you can give as a gift (or keep for yourself)\, in a style that can be replicated throughout the year by just changing the color palette\, and also learn tips and get started on creating an egg and crepe paper pine cone. You will be given materials to finish your pine cone at home if you cannot finish it in class. Both the acorn and the pine cone are wonderful\, wintery specimens! \nTiffanie Turner is an architect\, artist and performer who began working passionately in paper last year. Since then\, her work has appeared on numerous art and lifestyle blogs\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, One Kings Lane\, and in her recent San Francisco solo gallery show entitled HEADS. Tiffanie has taught classes for Martha Stewart Living and online for creativeLIVE\, and currently teaches workshops in several different paper techniques around the Bay Area and beyond under the moniker papel SF.”

SUMMARY:Renegade Craft Fair
DESCRIPTION:Renegade Craft Fair \nSaturday-Sunday\, November 5-12\, 11:00AM-6:00PM \nFestival Pavilion\, Fort Mason Center\, 99 Marina Boulevard\, San Francisco \nFree \nhttp://www.renegadecraft.com/sanfrancisco-july-market-details \n  \n“Renegade Craft Fair is the world’s premier network of events serving the DIY craft community. Our founders had been looking for an event to participate in\, but existing events were highly focused on fine arts + crafts. Limited but affordable parking is available at the Fort Mason Center lot. Unfortunately\, pets are not allowed in the venue\, so please do not bring your adorable dog.”
