SUMMARY:My Neighbor Totoro
DESCRIPTION:My Neighbor Totoro \npresented by Francophone Charter School \nSunday\, November 23\, 12:30-2:30PM \nThe New Parkway Theater\, 474 24th Street\, Oakland\, 510-658-7900 \n$8 \nhttp://thenewparkway.com/wp/?date=11/23/14 \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/my-neighbor-totoro-tickets-14053573617 \nhttp://www.francophoneschool.org \n  \n“This superbly animated children’s tale is directed by Hayao Miyazaki\, one of Japan’s most beloved animators. The story follows Satsuke and Mei\, two young girls who find that their new country home is in a mystical forest inhabited by a menagerie of mystical creatures called Totoros. They befriend O Totoro\, the biggest and eldest Totoro\, who is also the king of the forest. As their girls’ mother lies sick in the hospital\, O Totoro brings the sisters on a magical adventure but also helps them to understand the realities of life. Like most films released by Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli\, this family-oriented feature has a powerful ecological theme. (movie played in English) \nThis event will support the Francophone Charter School of Oakland\, a TK to 3rd grade public charter school with a French language immersion program opening in the fall of 2015.”

SUMMARY:The Power Of Singing: Polyphonia - Albania’s Forgotten Voices
DESCRIPTION:The Power Of Singing: Polyphonia – Albania’s Forgotten Voices \nfilm screening \nSunday\, November 16\, 1:00-3:00PM \nSilk Road House\, 1944 University Avenue\, Berkeley\, 510-981-0700 \nhttp://www.silkroadhouse.org \nhttp://www.academia.edu/1033704/Documentary_Polyphonia_-_Albanias_forgotten_voices \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Xcuh95Lnk8 \n  \n“Two shepherds in the Albanian mountains\, Arif\, a Muslim\, and Anastas\, an orthodox Christian\, have been friends for years in spite of religious barriers. Their profound friendship is constantly strengthened by the local music-making\, a unique choral polyphony. In 2005\, UNESCO proclaimed this vocal tradition a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. \nThe film sets up unforgettable images for severe poetry\, harsh fates and almost magical power of human voice\, which helps people in the mountains to master their surreal daily routine at a contradictory stage of post-socialist change. On another level\, the film gives an example of how music – even in the Balkans’ complexity – can build bridges between people and religions. \nA documentary film by Eckehard Pistrick and Bjorn Reinhardt. Eckehard Pistrick (b. 1980) is a German ethnomusicologist currently working in Halle and Paris. He conducted fieldworks in Cambodia\, Bali\, Greece and Albania and is the co-editor of Audiovisual Media and Identity Issues in Southeastern Europe\, Cambridge Scholars Publishers\, 2011. Bjorn Reinhardt (b. 1963 in Germany) worked as a stage designer and documentarian before immigrating to Romania in 2002. For the last 10 years he has been making internationally appraised documentaries mainly in the Maramureș region\, which is situated on the northeastern Carpathians\, but also in Crete\, Northern Greece\, Albania\, and elsewhere. Since 2007 he has also been working as a photographer. \nRunning time: 85 minutes. In Albanian with English subtitles. \nSilk Road House events are sponsored by the Silkroad Foundation.”

We provide opportunities for transgender and gender variant media artists\, build community through our film and performance events\, and engage our audiences in cross-community dialogue. \n  \nFounded in 1997 and originally named Tranny Fest\, SFTFF was North America’s first transgender film festival. We organized our first festival for the same reason so many other marginalized communities have organized film festivals: the absence of authentic representations of our lives and experiences in the mainstream commercial media. Originally a biennial event\, SFTFF screened films and videos by transgender and gender variant media artists whose work challenged stereotypes. We primarily served filmmakers with extremely limited access to venues. After five biennual festivals\, overwhelming audience demand led our organizers to begin staging the Festival as an annual event in 1997. \nJoin us for three days and nights of award-winning transgender cinema\, dynamic programs of local\, national and international films by transgender and gender variant artists from around the world.”

SUMMARY:Un(Dis)sing Our Abilities
DESCRIPTION:Un(Dis)sing Our Abilities \nThursday\, October 16\, 9:30PM \nThe New Parkway Theater\, 474 24th Street\, Oakland\, 510-658-7900 \n$10 \n18+ \nhttp://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/859124 \nhttp://thenewparkway.com/wp/?date=10/16/2014 \nhttp://periwinklecinema.com \n  \n“Un(dis)sing Our Abilities is an experimental sexplicit short movie showcase presented by Periwinkle Cinema that explores sensuality\, intimacy\, safety and consent through the lens of the less-represented. Curated by Lisa Ganser and Lorin Murphy\, this screening implores the erotic pleasure and sexual abilities of those of us dissed\, dismissed\, (mis)labeled\, disabled and generally passed over in mainstream queer crowds. Redefine sexy through sex and sensuality that is healing\, empowering and arousing. You’ll get turned on by fat\, crip\, and porn\, challenge and subvert your notions of gender\, sexuality and self\, while exposing what it means to ‘work with what we got (or not).’ Experience images of the sexually empowered within our own very different\, and always changing bodies. We tell our stories on film and come together to experience each other’s in the dark\, then see each other in a new way when the lights come up. This screening includes short films by Courtney Trouble\, Seeley Quest\, Patricia Berne\, MOON RAY RA\, Tobi Hill-Meyer and a brand new short movie\, Wall of Fire\, by and featuring Nomy Lamm and Lisa Ganser. Wall of Fire was completely underwritten and fully funded by the Smitten Kitten. The curators and filmmakers will be in person to present the showcase and for a brief Q and A. \n  \nThe New Parkway Theater is a community-centered cinema and pub located in Oakland’s Uptown district. Sit back and relax in our cozy couches while watching our new releases\, cult classics\, and fabulous special programming. Plus\, enjoy yummy food and local beer and wine in our café or even delivered right to your theater seat all at affordable prices! \n  \nEvery week we have something for everyone… from Doc Night to Baby Brigade and Nerd Nite to Party at the Parkway\, and everything in between. Also\, join us on the mezzanine for free\, non-film events like Open Mike Mondays\, Tasty Tuesdays\, Pop-Up Art Wednesdays\, Trivia Thursdays\, and First Fridays. \nThe New Parkway = Film. Friends. Food. Fun on Tap.”
