“She is the Old Crone of Winter, the Queen of Winter, Goddess Beira of Scotland is a Goddess of transformation and creation.  She is the Mother of all the Goddesses and Gods. She is part of the Triple Goddess who make up the seasons of the year. She is a Giantess who walks the Earth, covering it with snow that falls from Her hair. She creates mountains ranges and valleys with Her magical hammer. She leaps from mountaintop to mountaintop, dropping rocks which create the rolling sacred hills. Beira controls the weather of Winter, unleashing powerful and cleansing storms.

Beira also protects the animals during the Winter by putting them to sleep, hibernating until the spring. She assists the deer in finding food in the snow-covered forests and valleys of the mountains.  At Winter Solstice, Beira drinks of the fountain of youth and slowly starts to become young again as Spring arrives.

Beira has been made in many of the stories to be an ugly, angry, old crone, seeing old age as something evil and to be avoided.  We have lost our connection to our elders, often locking them away or disregarding their wisdom.  We need to change this, we are losing so much.  At this time the we celebrate all the mysteries of the Winter and of the wise ones – our elders.  How can we honor the elders in our lives?  How do we open up to hearing the wisdom that has been gained thru a lifetime of living?  These are women who have paved the way for us, and can teach us the mystery of what it is to live the cycles of the years, the changes in womyn’s bodies, and magic of life.

We are sending a special shout out to the crones of our community.  Many we see only once a year at our Annual Womyn’s Spiral Dance.  You have so much to offer, and so much that we can learn from.  It would be wonderful to have you come and join us at this altar to celebrate this important and sacred stage of life.

For the altar, please bring a white candle and stone or rock that is sacred to you.  Also if you have any images or symbols of Beira, please bring them for the altar. Her Symbols are sacred stones, ravens, crows, the waning moon, and falling leaves.

Come and celebrate with us the wonders and Mysteries of the Winter Crone.

If you are interested in participating in a ritual or celebration, please help out by doing the following:

Please bring a snack to share (if possible, food of the culture we are celebrating), washable eating utensils (bowl, cup, plate, utensils, etc. In honor of Mother Earth, we do not provide disposable items), a candle (for safety reasons, we highly recommend a candle in a glass container, often called a novena), and pillow or chair to sit on to all rituals. For more information about our rituals please visit our FAQ page.

Please see our current series schedule and check the web page for the specific ritual to see what items to bring and how to prepare yourself. Please take the time to read this, especially if you are a newcomer. New information is added from time to time so even if you feel you have already seen this, it is important to check back in every now and then.”
