“WALiB-Live! is the expression of the theme ‘We All Live in Bhopal’ through dance, poetry, song, comedy, and short videos and is part of a series of events Commemorating 30 years of the Union Carbide Gas Disaster in Bhopal.
We All Live in Bhopal because all over the world we are all exposed to industrial pollution and are at risk for accidental exposure to lethal and toxic doses of industrial chemicals.
The 1984 Union Carbide Gas Disaster in Bhopal is considered the worst industrial tragedy in history. The catastrophe continues today with contaminated groundwater and soil surrounding the abandoned factory. A survey of the area suggests children born in the contaminated areas are more likely to have congenital birth defects and neurological damage than the average child in India.
Performances this evening will feature:
Brigitte Chataignier: Bhopal Blue, a dance video, blending contemporary dance and Mohini Attam, a classical form from the southern state of Kerala in India, sent from France on the theme of inter-generational effects of disaster and trauma.
Christine Germain: contemporary dance duet seven years in the making about the Union Carbide Gas Disaster in Bhopal
Judith Kajiwara: Butoh dance company exploring the Chisso Mercury Disaster in Minamata Bay, Japan
Leslie Schneider on vocals and Ben Kunin on sarode: Hindustani song Zahirili Hawa from the play Bhopal by Rahul Varma
Megan Dogra: short video made on her Spring Break visit to Bhopal when she was in tenth grade
Samson Koletkar: stand up comedy on corporate responsibility and integrity, or lack thereof
Stan Sprague: poetry to inspire
Terry Alan: Flames not Flowers, a short video on the role of women in the struggle for justice in Bhopal”
