SUMMARY:The Gleaners and I
DESCRIPTION:The Gleaners and I \nMovie Night at SHED Grange \nWednesday\, January 14\, 6:00-8:30PM \nSHED Grange\, 25 North Street\, Healdsburg \nFree\, donations accepted \nhttp://healdsburgshed.com/events/movie-night-gleaners \nhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gleaners_and_I \nhttp://farmtopantry.org \n  \nGleaning is the act of collecting “seconds\,” or surplus crops for the hungry\, and has been a component of farming communities since agriculture began. Some ancient cultures even promoted gleaning as an early form of a welfare system. \nThe Gleaners and I is an award-winning documentary from the the idiosyncratic French filmmaker Agnes Varda\, and it takes its title from the iconic 1867 painting by Jean-Francois Millet that shows three women stooping in a wheat field to pick up sheaves and kernels left behind after the harvest. The film explores gleaning as not only an expression of community but a way to reduce waste and bring fresh produce to those who need it. \nHealdsburg has its own active gleaning community\, and on this after-hours movie night we’ll learn about the non-profit organization Farm to Pantry from its founder\, Melita Love. Come at 6:00PM to meet the gleaners and have a glass of wine\, beer\, or house kombucha and some movie snacks. \nAt 6:30PM we’ll introduce Melita and start the show. Admission is by donation. All proceeds will go to support Farm to Pantry. \n  \nFarm to Pantry was founded in 2008 as a volunteer organization with the belief that healthy food nurtures a healthy community. They are committed to developing and supporting local projects that provide healthy food to everyone\, especially those in the community who are hungry or have limited access to nutritious produce. Farm to Pantry is grateful for the support of all the gleaning volunteers\, property owners\, and donors in our community who have given generously of their time and resources to help them surpass 164\,00 pounds of gleaned produce.

The Divine Feminine is the Goddess in all traditions and cultures that have been in place since the beginning of time. These traditions are powerful\, mystical\, magical\, and primal to Mother Earth. It is a time of restoration\, healing\, and renewal. \nAs these feminine energies intertwine with our Divine Spark the birthing of ideas are limitless – the task is to sort out which idea calls the heart to step forward and take flight. \nDuring this fireside chat\, Flordemayo will share with us the ideas that are calling to her heart\, especially the importance of saving seeds\, and the work she has created with The Path\, five sacred temples for humanity housed on 40-acres in Estancia\, New Mexico. She will also share a simple practice of connecting to the divine feminine. \n  \nSign-Up Now and Receive \nOnline fireside chat with Flordemayo and Robin \nYou are encouraged to join the conversation during the program \nUnlimited online access to the video recording following the event \n  \nCurandera espiritu (healer by divine spirit) and Mayan priestess Flordemayo is one of the 13 grandmothers of the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers\, a global alliance that teaches ancestral ways of prayer\, education and healing. Flordemayo was born in a small village on the Nicaragua/Honduras border. Her father was a local shaman and her mother was a midwife and healer\, whom Flordemayo apprenticed with from the age four. As her own children grew\, Flordemayo began to work as a healer. Today\, she uses the sacred breath\, laying on of hands\, application of herbs\, as well as distance healing\, with her clients. \nFlordemayo has worked with alternative western healers\, Native American and Mayan healers. She received her Mayan priest training from Don Alejandro Cirilo Perez Oxlaj\, a respected spiritual leader and head of the Quiche Maya Council of Elders. Flordemayo is now recognized as a priestess by the Maya. \nFlordemayo has been a featured speaker on Curanderismo at many conferences on traditional medicine\, both within the United States and internationally. Many alternative healing practitioners\, medical doctors\, nurses and medical institutions have recognized her knowledge and natural healing skills. She is a recipient of the Martin de la Cruz Award for Alternative Healing\, a prestigious honor given by the International Congress of Traditional Medicine. \nSince 1999\, Flordemayo has been a part of the Wisdom of the Grandmother’s Foundation.”

SUMMARY:Remembering David Nadel\, founder of Ashkenaz
DESCRIPTION:Remembering David Nadel\, founder of Ashkenaz\nfeaturing Razor and the Rocksteadies\, Taraf de Locos\, Balkan Folkdancing\nFriday\, December 19\, 6:30-9:00PM\nAshkenaz 1317 San Pablo Avenue\, Berkeley\n$15\nhttp://www.ashkenaz.com/event-detail.php?field=&value=&offset=3&eventid=503\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1515503588734075\nhttp://www.eventbrite.com/e/remembering-david-nadel-razor-the-rocksteadies-taraf-de-locos-balkan-folkdancing-tickets-14892761651 \n  \n“Remembering David Nadel is an annual tribute to the late founder of Ashkenaz. It’s been 18 years since Nadel passed away\, but he is still remembered and his influence deeply felt throughout the communities he sparked. This benefit event reflects Ashkenaz’s diversity and our spirit – and his vision – of bringing people together through music and dance. \nAnchored by the drumming and toasting of Emsley RazorBlade Fraser (of Sister I-Live and the Reggae Angels)\, Razor and the Rocksteadies bring classic reggae to the stage of Ashkenaz. The band is comprised of Ashkenaz regulars and staff including Joe Balestreri (The Bug Family/The Flux) on trumpet\, Max Lopez (Clementine String Band) on bass\, Jennifer Jolly (Kotoja\, Zulu Spear) on keyboards\, and Aaron Hammerman (Clementine String Band) on guitar. Inspired by the records DJ-ed by longtime Ashkenaz doorman Edwin Thaxter during late-night dominoes games at Ashkenaz\, the Rocksteadies draw material from the golden age of Jamaican ska\, rocksteady\, and roots reggae. Playing in honor of David Nadel\, the Rocksteadies will be joined by special guests from throughout Ashkenaz’s diverse community of family and musicians. \nTaraf de Locos is a world music dance band whose roots trace to its members’ meeting as children at a summer music camp\, where they played together in the various styles of their different cultures. As adults they carry on that approach. They play a mix of songs and tunes from Spain\, Romania\, Macedonia\, Albania\, Greece\, Turkey\, Tajikistan\, Brazil\, Colombia\, Cuba\, and Mexico. As best friends\, they bring a fun-loving energy that is genuinely contagious. Taraf de Locos features Aya Safiya on violin and vocals; Cecilia Cassandra Peña-Govea on trumpet\, guirra\, and vocals; Miguelito León on percussion and vocals; and Tano Brock on guitar\, saxophone\, and vocals. \nA monthly fixture at Ashkenaz\, Balkan Folkdancing is a revival of ’70s-style Berkeley folkdancing with some international request dancing to recorded music\, capturing the spirit that David Nadel was inspired by when he opened Ashkenaz in 1973. One does not need a live band to experience the communal pleasure of dancing together. Dance lessons offered at the monthly Wednesday event help newcomers join in the experience.”
