SUMMARY:Lighted Yacht Parade: Light Up the Night
DESCRIPTION:Lighted Yacht Parade: Light Up the Night \nSaturday\, December 6\, 5:30-6:30PM \nWind River Business Park\, 500 Wind River Way\, Alameda \n(see website for parking information)\nFree \nhttp://www.lightedyachtparade.com \nhttp://www.ofrandomacts.org \nhttp://www.accfb.org \n  \n“The 38th annual Lighted Yacht Parade takes place Saturday\, December 6\, 2014 along the waterfront of the Oakland/Alameda Estuary. The parade begins just  after sunset\, around 5:30PM\, and this year’s parade theme is Light Up the Night. \nEach year on the first Saturday in December\, the Lighted Yacht Parade celebrates the holiday season. Bay Area boat owners share in the holiday spirit by decorating their boats and participating in the parade. Hundreds of spectators gather along the waterfront at public viewing areas such as Wind River Park in Alameda and Jack London Square in Oakland\, or at waterfront restaurants along the estuary. For the price of an unwrapped toy\, spectators can even participate in the parade by riding on the San Francisco Bay ferry. In 2013\, over thirty boats participated in the parade\, and this year’s organizers expect even more. \nIn addition to creating a magical evening of lights\, the parade organizers partner with the Oakland Firefighters Random Acts and the Alameda County Community Food Bank to generate donations of food\, unwrapped toys\, or money at designated drop sites. These donations go a long way toward providing food and toys to deserving kids and families during the holiday season. Last year’s event generated several hundred dollars in cash donations and in toy and food donations.”

DESCRIPTION:Celebration of Craftswomen \nFriday-Sunday\, November 28-30\, 10:00AM-6:00PM \nHerbst Pavilion\, Fort Mason\, Buchanan Avenue and Marina Boulevard\, San Francisco \n$9 adults\, $7 students and seniors\, children under 12 free \nhttp://www.celebrationofcraftswomen.org (site plays video automatically) \nhttp://www.fortmason.org \n  \n“This event has become one of San Francisco’s top holiday attractions. But it has also remained true to its primary mission: addressing the lack of visibility and opportunities for women artists. To that end\, along with judging for quality\, the juries aim to provide opportunities to the emerging artists as well as women of color\, older women\, lesbian and bisexual women\, and immigrant women. \nSince its inception\, the Celebrations of Craftswomen has been a benefit for The Women’s Building\, a multi-cultural community center where women and girls achieve self-sufficiency and pursue their dreams. Funds raised through the raffle\, admission fees\, and booth fees go to the organizations many programs\, including free bilingual Spanish/English information and referral service\, educational support for low-income adults\, financial counseling\, and community events that promote arts\, culture\, and discussion. The Women’s Building also houses ten diverse community groups and have helped launch more than 160 women’s programs and initiatives in San Francisco. The Women’s Building is the first women-owned community center in the U.S.”

SUMMARY:My Neighbor Totoro
DESCRIPTION:My Neighbor Totoro \npresented by Francophone Charter School \nSunday\, November 23\, 12:30-2:30PM \nThe New Parkway Theater\, 474 24th Street\, Oakland\, 510-658-7900 \n$8 \nhttp://thenewparkway.com/wp/?date=11/23/14 \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/my-neighbor-totoro-tickets-14053573617 \nhttp://www.francophoneschool.org \n  \n“This superbly animated children’s tale is directed by Hayao Miyazaki\, one of Japan’s most beloved animators. The story follows Satsuke and Mei\, two young girls who find that their new country home is in a mystical forest inhabited by a menagerie of mystical creatures called Totoros. They befriend O Totoro\, the biggest and eldest Totoro\, who is also the king of the forest. As their girls’ mother lies sick in the hospital\, O Totoro brings the sisters on a magical adventure but also helps them to understand the realities of life. Like most films released by Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli\, this family-oriented feature has a powerful ecological theme. (movie played in English) \nThis event will support the Francophone Charter School of Oakland\, a TK to 3rd grade public charter school with a French language immersion program opening in the fall of 2015.”
