SUMMARY:Wonderboy and 29 Effeminate Gestures
DESCRIPTION:Wonderboy and 29 Effeminate Gestures \nCo-Presented by Joe Goode Performance Group and Z Space \nThursday-Saturday\, October 2-4\, \nThursday and Friday 8:00PM\, Saturday 3:00PM and 8:00PM \nZ Space\, 450 Florida Street\, San Francisco \nsee website for ticket details \nhttp://zspace.org/new-work/wonderboy-29-effeminate-gestures \nhttp://joegoode.org \nhttp://www.basiltwist.com \n  \n  \n“Over the past couple of years\, Joe Goode Performance Group and Z Space have forged quite a partnership\, co-producing When We Fall Apart (2012) and HUSH (2013) at Z Space. Joe Goode is also doing the choreography for Hundred Days\, Z Space’s long awaited Indie-rock Opera starring the Bengsons. We are honored to have the troupe back in 2014 for encore performances of two signature pieces. \n  \nWonderboy tells an unexpected tale of a peculiar superhero puppet isolated by his gift of sensitivity. The work first premiered at YBCA in 2008 to critical acclaim\, with the Washington Post calling Wonderboy ‘One of the most inventive solos with a prop in recent memory.’ Using JGPG’s unique blend of storytelling through text\, song\, and dance\, Wonderboy is a marvelous collaboration with acclaimed New York City based puppeteer Basil Twist. Showcasing Goode’s fearless innovation\, the integration of puppet with dancers provides audiences with a unique creative experience highlighting the great humanity and sensitivity embodied in Twist’s puppet work. The operation of the puppet becomes part of the dance\, at times invisible and other times integrated. Original musical composition by singer/violinist Carla Kihlstedt and pianist/drummer Matthias Bossi. \n  \nJoe Goode’s legendary 1987 work\, 29 Effeminate Gestures\, is a 12-minute solo set to music by Erik Ian Walker. It is an illuminating look at stereotypes of masculinity and considered Goode’s signature work. The cutting edge masterpiece originated in San Francisco before becoming a seminal work of socially relevant contemporary dance. San Francisco Chronicle called the work ‘…a masterpiece of gender deconstruction. Images of Goode wielding a chainsaw and later a power drill flank a parade of in-your-face queer moves\, as spoken warnings like ‘if you talk too much\, laugh too much\, feel too much’ trail into nervous laughter. Goode’s comic timing is superb.’ The solo will be performed by current company member Melecio Estrella.” \n

A light thread through the body from the center of the Earth toward to outer space. A flower starts blooming on your chest. By the fragrance of the flower\, you wake up. SUMMARY:Taboo and Heroes
DESCRIPTION:Taboo and Heroes \npresented by Kiandanda Dance \nSaturday\, September 27\, 8:00PM \nZaccho Dance Theatre\, 1777 Yosemite Avenue\, #330\, San Francisco \n$15 \nhttp://www.sfiaf.org/taboo_and_heroes \nhttp://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/809139 \nhttp://www.zaccho.org \n  \n“Taboo and Heroes explores the situation of the wars that struck the Republic of Congo in the late 1990s in a multimedia performance\, featuring modern and traditional dance\, interactive video design\, and live contemporary music. Taboo and Heroes addresses the reality and consequences of violence and corruption through the specific experiences of Byb Chanel Bibene. Bringing together dance and theater performers\, an original music score\, set design and video elements\, the piece aims to transport the audience into the charged atmosphere of conflict that permeated\, and still echoes in everyday life in the Republic of Congo. This piece transposes the Congolese environment on stage. \n  \nExploring the subject of victims of war and the lack of freedom of expression due to irresponsible dictatorial powers and the neo-colonial influences of western powers\, choreographer Bibene\, as a survivor of the Congolese war\, intends to demonstrate the essence of these dramatic situations of war\, which are lived by thousands of people throughout the world. This project is intended to lead people to pay more attention to what is going on in the world\, because a collective effort can help find solutions and lead to a better life not only in Africa but also in the rest of the world\, ecologically\, socially\, politically\, and humanly.\nFrom my questioning of the sources and implications of conflicts came the impetus to create a performance work that could inspire active consideration of current events\, in the belief that this is another step towards collective solutions to global problems. This work is intended to be a mobile\, internationally viable project that can widely communicate its political initiative through the explanatory power of its emotional and kinetic journeys. This project is furthermore a turning point in my career as choreographer: it is an extensive\, long-term undertaking\, employing new creative approaches in my choreography and socio-political purpose. The fruition of this project will allow Kiandanda Dance Theater to establish itself significantly in its new home in San Francisco.”

Each year since 1989\, the Parish has hosted this festival of foods from Middle Eastern\, Eritrean\, Russian\, Greek\, Balkan\, Romanian\, Italian and American cultures. The food is all fresh and ethnically authentic. \n  \nGlendi is Greek for party\, and we throw a great one! We have a diverse entertainment schedule with live music by Edessa both days\, dancers\, dance lessons\, and a candlelit choir concert Saturday evening. Take a church tour that explains the meaning behind the structure and iconography of an Orthodox Church and highlights the timeless frescoes that adorn the interior. Church tours and talks are conducted by our principle iconographer and others within our community. \n  \nWe view Glendi as our gift to the community. Glendi is our opportunity to share the rich cultural heritage of our parish. It is also a fundraiser\, and a portion of the proceeds are donated to local charitable organizations. \n  \nGlendi is all about fun and family! In addition to the food\, dancing\, and tours we have a Crafts Booth\, Book Store\, Children’s Area\, and many other entertaining activities.\nBeverages include beer from local microbreweries and an impressive selection of wines. As it cools off in the evening\, try our Greek\, Eritrean or regular coffee with ethnic sweets from our bakery including homemade baklava\, and the new Baklava Sundae. We feature Sonoma County wines and micro-brew beers in addition to coffee in many styles\, excellent teas\, soft drinks\, and frozen treats. This year\, we are expanding to include a German themed Biergarten\, away from the activity of the dance area\, offering snacks and beers from a single local brewery.”

Each Tuesday we will teach a different variation and begin at the beginning\, so come to as many as you want.  No partner needed; this is danced in a group rather than with a partner. \n  \nMorris Dance is a traditional English performance dating back hundreds of years\, typically done in the spring by a team of dancers and musicians who have practised together over the winter months.  Berkeley Morris was founded in 1977. We perform throughout the Bay Area and beyond. Our team members cover a wide range of locations\, professions\, ages and genders.” \n  \nThese are the Morris Dancers who make the sun come up at Tilden Park on Beltane!
