SUMMARY:Remembering David Nadel\, founder of Ashkenaz
DESCRIPTION:Remembering David Nadel\, founder of Ashkenaz\nfeaturing Razor and the Rocksteadies\, Taraf de Locos\, Balkan Folkdancing\nFriday\, December 19\, 6:30-9:00PM\nAshkenaz 1317 San Pablo Avenue\, Berkeley\n$15\nhttp://www.ashkenaz.com/event-detail.php?field=&value=&offset=3&eventid=503\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1515503588734075\nhttp://www.eventbrite.com/e/remembering-david-nadel-razor-the-rocksteadies-taraf-de-locos-balkan-folkdancing-tickets-14892761651 \n  \n“Remembering David Nadel is an annual tribute to the late founder of Ashkenaz. It’s been 18 years since Nadel passed away\, but he is still remembered and his influence deeply felt throughout the communities he sparked. This benefit event reflects Ashkenaz’s diversity and our spirit – and his vision – of bringing people together through music and dance. \nAnchored by the drumming and toasting of Emsley RazorBlade Fraser (of Sister I-Live and the Reggae Angels)\, Razor and the Rocksteadies bring classic reggae to the stage of Ashkenaz. The band is comprised of Ashkenaz regulars and staff including Joe Balestreri (The Bug Family/The Flux) on trumpet\, Max Lopez (Clementine String Band) on bass\, Jennifer Jolly (Kotoja\, Zulu Spear) on keyboards\, and Aaron Hammerman (Clementine String Band) on guitar. Inspired by the records DJ-ed by longtime Ashkenaz doorman Edwin Thaxter during late-night dominoes games at Ashkenaz\, the Rocksteadies draw material from the golden age of Jamaican ska\, rocksteady\, and roots reggae. Playing in honor of David Nadel\, the Rocksteadies will be joined by special guests from throughout Ashkenaz’s diverse community of family and musicians. \nTaraf de Locos is a world music dance band whose roots trace to its members’ meeting as children at a summer music camp\, where they played together in the various styles of their different cultures. As adults they carry on that approach. They play a mix of songs and tunes from Spain\, Romania\, Macedonia\, Albania\, Greece\, Turkey\, Tajikistan\, Brazil\, Colombia\, Cuba\, and Mexico. As best friends\, they bring a fun-loving energy that is genuinely contagious. Taraf de Locos features Aya Safiya on violin and vocals; Cecilia Cassandra Peña-Govea on trumpet\, guirra\, and vocals; Miguelito León on percussion and vocals; and Tano Brock on guitar\, saxophone\, and vocals. \nA monthly fixture at Ashkenaz\, Balkan Folkdancing is a revival of ’70s-style Berkeley folkdancing with some international request dancing to recorded music\, capturing the spirit that David Nadel was inspired by when he opened Ashkenaz in 1973. One does not need a live band to experience the communal pleasure of dancing together. Dance lessons offered at the monthly Wednesday event help newcomers join in the experience.”

Through the course of the two-act musical\, they tell eight stories which celebrate and honor the triumphs of Chanukah heroes from the time of the Maccabees through modern day – all in their delightfully foolish Chelm style. This new Chanukah production has all the right ingredients for a very happy holiday: take the beautiful and melodious music from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Ballet\, mix in eight poignant and witty stories celebrating the miracle of Chanukah\, and add a pinch of Chelm for flavor. Add twirling chanukiot and you’ll have visions of sufganiot dancing in your head. Some might call it crazy\, we call it… The MeshugaNutcracker! \nThe MeshugaNutcracker! is a full length musical performed in two acts. It runs approximately 2 hours including a 15 minute intermission. Latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiot (jelly doughnuts) will be available before the show and during intermission. The show is appropriate for all audiences but recommended for youth who are able to sit through a Pixar film.”

DESCRIPTION:The MeshugaNutcracker \npresented by Guggenheim Entertainment \nhttp://themeshuganutcracker.com \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qkk1RmxDzC0 \n  \nThursdays-Sundays\, December 4-14\, \nThursday-Fridays 7:30PM\, Saturdays 2:00PM and 7:30PM\, Sundays 2:00PM \nMarines’ Memorial Theatre\, 609 Sutter Street\, San Francisco\, 415-673-6672 \nsee website for ticket information \nhttps://www.cityboxoffice.com/eventperformances.asp?evt=1981 \nhttp://www.marinesmemorialtheatre.com \n  \nThursday-Sunday\, December 25-28\, \nThursday 2:00PM and 7:30PM\, Friday 7:30PM\, Saturday 2:00PM and 7:30PM\, Sunday 2:00PM \nHeritage Theatre\, 1 W Campbell Avenue\, Campbell\, 408-866-2700 \nsee website for ticket information \nhttps://www.vendini.com/ticket-software.html?t=tix&e=b779bbdeb0958c3f2f9b10a590026bda \nhttp://www.cityofcampbell.com/heritagetheatre \n  \n“The libretto tells the tale of eight Chelmniks (citizens of Chelm\, the fictional town of fools) who gather once a year to perform their Chanukah festival.
