Litquake is a project of the Litquake Foundation\, a 501(c)3 nonprofit registered in the state of California. \n  \nFrom Litstock to Litquake \nOriginally hatched over beers at the Edinburgh Castle pub in 1999\, Litstock debuted as a free one-day reading series in a fog-bound Golden Gate Park. Local writers Jane Ganahl and Jack Boulware realized quickly that booklovers craved something grander. Against the backdrop of a technology-crazed San Francisco\, writers were still drawn to the city\, and readers still appreciated the written word. \n  \nIn 2002\, the festival was rechristened Litquake\, and began expanding its programming to include all elements of the Bay Area literary scene. Taking a cue from a USA Today report that San Franciscans spend twice the nation’s average on books and booze\, in 2004\, the festival inaugurated an immediately successful closing night Lit Crawl bacchanal throughout the city’s Mission District. \n  \nPopular demand drove Litquake to expand even further\, adding more national and international authors\, youth programs\, classroom visits and book giveaways\, monthly literary Epicenters\, and special localized editions of the Lit Crawl now held each year in Manhattan\, Austin\, Seattle\, Brooklyn\, Iowa City\, Los Angeles\, Miami\, and London. \n  \nWhether it’s poets reciting in a cathedral\, authors discussing science versus religion in a library\, or novelists reading in a beekeeping supply store\, the goal remains the same: whet a broad range of literary appetites\, present the literary fare in a variety of traditional and unlikely venues\, and make it vivid\, real\, and entertaining. Now grown to the largest independent literary festival on the West Coast\, Litquake continues its mission as a nine-day literary spectacle for booklovers\, complete with cutting-edge panel discussions\, unique cross-media events\, and hundreds of readings.”

Volunteers from around the world defend buffalo on their traditional winter habitat and advocate for their protection. Our daily patrols stand with the buffalo on the ground they choose to be on\, and document every move made against them. \n  \nVolunteers spend all day\, from sunrise until sunset\, watching and documenting actions taken against the buffalo. We run patrols from cars\, skis and snowshoes to protect buffalo outside the park. Tactics range from video documentation to nonviolent civil disobedience. \n  \nBFC enjoys incredible support and participation from the local community. Residents allow us to post signs on their property designating them as Buffalo Safe Zones. We offer a fence repair service to mitigate damage caused by wildlife. Locals join us on our daily rounds\, and many support our patrols with hot drinks and food. \n  \nAll of our work happens because people are willing to take a break from their usual schedules and come help. Over 3000 people from all over the country and around the world have joined us in our log cabin on Hebgen Lake to help stop the buffalo slaughter. We feed and house all our volunteers in our cabin and Gardner satellite camp. Volunteers patrol for buffalo by skis\, snowshoes\, or cars. Everyone communicates by a network of hand-held radios\, and also carries a video camera. \n  \nOur office runs outreach programs\, including slide and video presentations\, summer tabling in Yellowstone Park\, website and e-mail updates\, and national media coverage through press releases and video.”

DESCRIPTION:Village Building Convergence: Build Resilient Communities \nFriday\, September 12-Sunday\, September 21 \nvarious venues in Sebastopol \nsee website for admission and schedule details \nhttp://sebastopolvbc.weebly.com \nhttps://www.facebook.com/sebastopolvbc \n  \n“The Village Building Convergence is an annual collaboration and cross pollination of neighbors\, groups and civic partnerships to transform our town through village life patterns and educational placemaking projects. \n  \nThis culminates in a ten day Fall celebration including creating street murals\, cob bus stops\, community gardens\, and much more as local citizens and visitors take to the streets of Sebastopol during the ten day placemaking festival. \n  \nThe VBC will also host educational and celebratory events in the evenings. Most evening events of educational and inspirational presentations\, food\, music\, and a whole lot of celebration\, will be held at the Sebastopol Grange. \n  \nMany of you may have heard of VBC from our northern allies in Portland who have been doing this successfully for 14 years. Now it’s our turn to bring this awesome event home. \n  \nPlacemaking is the act of locals coming together to shape their common spaces in a way that promotes beauty and community. Projects may take the shape of benches on corners\, street painting projects\, sharing kiosks\, natural building projects and a multitude of other ways to inspire neighbors to gather in public spaces. \n  \nAll daytime placemaking events are free\, and everyone of all ages is invited to come help paint\, build\, and plant and create beauty together. Tickets for evening events can be purchased separately on the day of the event. Whole event passes are available presale on the VBC website now.”
