SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting of the Peninsula Astronomical Society
DESCRIPTION:Monthly Meeting of the Peninsula Astronomical Society \nthe second Friday of each month\, 7:30PM \nRoom 5015\, next to Parking Lot 5\, Foothill College\, 12345 El Monte Road\, Los Altos Hills \nAdmission Free\, Parking $3 \nhttp://pastro.org/dnn \nhttp://www.foothill.edu/news/maps.php \n  \n“Check the website for details on the guest speaker for each month. \n  \nThe Peninsula Astronomical Society is a group of some 200 Bay Area astronomy enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds. Some members are professionally trained in astronomy\, others are just starting and have never looked through a telescope before. One thing that we all have in common is an interest in the sky. \n  \nThe PAS holds meetings on the second Friday of each month at 7:30PM on the campus of Foothill College in Los Altos Hills\, CA (between San Jose and Palo Alto).  The meetings are usually held in Room 5015\, next to Parking Lot 5 (see map). Each meeting features a speaker (or speakers) bringing us up to date on different topics in astronomy. The public is welcome to attend these meetings; there is no charge to attend.  Note\, however\, that there is a $3 charge for parking – visitor parking permits are available from the machines in the parking lots.  Dispensers accept one-dollar bills and quarters; bring exact change. Please do not park in spaces marked Staff – you will be ticketed! \n  \nAs part of its commitment to bringing astronomy to the public\, the Peninsula Astronomical Society operates the Foothill College Observatory http://www.pastro.org/dnn/Observatory/FoothillObservatory.aspx. \nThe Observatory is staffed by members of the society who volunteer to conduct the regularly scheduled public programs.\nIn addition to operating the Foothill Observatory\, the PAS has its own observatory in the nearby Santa Cruz Mountains. This location has AC power and room for members to set up their own telescopes at our monthly star parties. This site is also the home of the society’s 12″ telescope\, available for member use after a checkout.”

SUMMARY:An Evening with Jared Diamond
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Jared Diamond \npresented by Wonderfest \nTuesday\, December 9\, 6:30PM \nCastro Theater\, 429 Castro Street\, San Francisco\, 415-621-6120 \nsee website for ticket information \nhttp://wonderfest.org/evening-with-jared-diamond \nhttp://www.meetup.com/wonderfest/events/218902031 \nhttp://www.castrotheatre.com \nhttp://www.jareddiamond.org/Jared_Diamond/Welcome.html \n  \n“Jared Diamond\, UCLA Professor of Geography\, is a scientist known for drawing from a variety of fields: from anthropology to evolutionary biology. He has published several very popular science books\, including Pulitzer Prize-winning Guns\, Germs and Steel and\, most recently\, The World Until Yesterday. Diamond’s conclusions are critical and provocative\, exploring concepts such as how humans evolved to be so different from other animals (despite sharing over 98 percent of our DNA with chimpanzees)\, and why Eurasian peoples conquered Native Americans and Africans instead of vice versa. Diamond yet again challenges the way we think in The World Until Yesterday\, as he chronicles tribal peoples and what they can teach us about the shortcomings of modern society. Join Wonderfest and the Commonwealth Club for an hour of intellectual stimulation with one of the world’s most celebrated polymaths.”

DESCRIPTION:Life is the Ceremony; How We Live It Is the Ritual\nwith Wind Hughes\, Psychotherapist and Feminine Shaman\nThursday\, December 4\, 7:30PM\nMany Rivers Books and Tea\, 130 S. Main Street\, Sebastopol\, 707-829-8871\nFree\nhttp://www.manyriversbooks.com/t12_1.html\nhttp://www.windhughes.com \n  \n“Life is not about survival. It is about waking up! \nImagine how your life would change if you discovered the secrets to understanding the Natural Laws of Creation? What if you could access the wisdom of the ancients directly and were able to live your life as a spiritually awakened being\, with an open heart\, creating the life you dream of? \nWind Hughes is a modern-day feminine shaman. In this book\, she takes you on a journey out of the confines of the body to the expanded reaches of spiritual experience beyond life as we know it. Life Is the Ceremony chronicles her visions\, mystical experiences\, meeting with teachers from other dimensions\, and her use of ceremony to call in her soul mate. By sharing her personal journey through the mystical and quantum realms\, Wind makes the transcendent life accessible to everyone. \nThis book is a practical how-to guide for living your own unique conscious and awakened life\, and becoming the powerful manifestor that you are. It is a map leading to the doorway that opens to the other side. Awakening and becoming a Spiritual R-Evolutionary is the most powerful personal and political act. He has sung at a number of the park’s festivals\, and has researched sailors’ ballad traditions. Ballads were sung at the ‘dogwatch\,’ when ships’ crews had some time to relax from the daily and nightly routine of shipboard work. They were also sung ashore by men and women in seafaring and fishing communities. Experience this porthole into our past\, through song. The program is part of the park’s Lunchtime Lecture Series\, presented by the Maritime Research Center.”

SUMMARY:The Power Of Singing: Polyphonia - Albania’s Forgotten Voices
DESCRIPTION:The Power Of Singing: Polyphonia – Albania’s Forgotten Voices \nfilm screening \nSunday\, November 16\, 1:00-3:00PM \nSilk Road House\, 1944 University Avenue\, Berkeley\, 510-981-0700 \nhttp://www.silkroadhouse.org \nhttp://www.academia.edu/1033704/Documentary_Polyphonia_-_Albanias_forgotten_voices \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Xcuh95Lnk8 \n  \n“Two shepherds in the Albanian mountains\, Arif\, a Muslim\, and Anastas\, an orthodox Christian\, have been friends for years in spite of religious barriers. Their profound friendship is constantly strengthened by the local music-making\, a unique choral polyphony. In 2005\, UNESCO proclaimed this vocal tradition a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. \nThe film sets up unforgettable images for severe poetry\, harsh fates and almost magical power of human voice\, which helps people in the mountains to master their surreal daily routine at a contradictory stage of post-socialist change. On another level\, the film gives an example of how music – even in the Balkans’ complexity – can build bridges between people and religions. \nA documentary film by Eckehard Pistrick and Bjorn Reinhardt. Eckehard Pistrick (b. 1980) is a German ethnomusicologist currently working in Halle and Paris. He conducted fieldworks in Cambodia\, Bali\, Greece and Albania and is the co-editor of Audiovisual Media and Identity Issues in Southeastern Europe\, Cambridge Scholars Publishers\, 2011. Bjorn Reinhardt (b. 1963 in Germany) worked as a stage designer and documentarian before immigrating to Romania in 2002. For the last 10 years he has been making internationally appraised documentaries mainly in the Maramureș region\, which is situated on the northeastern Carpathians\, but also in Crete\, Northern Greece\, Albania\, and elsewhere. Since 2007 he has also been working as a photographer. \nRunning time: 85 minutes. In Albanian with English subtitles. \nSilk Road House events are sponsored by the Silkroad Foundation.”
