With five years of college under his belt and no degree\, then twenty-something year old Wright created a game based on designing and building cities. An entirely new kind of video game genre\, focused on open-ended\, non-violent gameplay was born! Hear Will discuss his journey and his upcoming projects. \nWill Wright (born January 20\, 1960\, Atlanta\, Georgia) is a well-known computer game designer and is co-founder of Maxis. He created groundbreaking games unlike any others such as: SimCity\, The Sims\, and Spore. Known for his unusual ideas and projects\, which later have become groundbreaking hits sealing his reputation as one of the most important game designers in the world. Currently CEO of Stupid Fun Club\, he’s now working on new concepts to expand the realm of gaming into our everyday lives. When asked what he does he just says ‘I design stuff.’”

SUMMARY:The Power of Grace: Recognizing Unexpected Gifts on Our Path
DESCRIPTION:The Power of Grace: Recognizing Unexpected Gifts on Our Path \nwith David Richo\, Best-selling Author of The Power of Grace \nThursday\, November 13\, 7:30PM \nMany Rivers Books and Tea\, 130 S. Main Street\, Sebastopol\, 707-829-8871 \nFree \nhttp://www.manyriversbooks.com/t11_2.html \n  \n“Grace is the term Dave Richo uses to describe any of those events in which help comes your way unexpectedly: when the solution to a perplexing problem just suddenly pops into your head; when you suddenly find the strength to rise to an occasion you didn’t think you could endure; when the next phase in your spiritual path becomes plain as day. Moments of Grace usually come as surprises\, but\, Richo shows\, we can learn to expect them – for Grace is a resource any of us can access. He begins by showing where to look to recognize the Grace that surrounds you: in nature\, in religion/spirituality\, in relationships\, in yourself. He then provides practical exercises for learning how to manifest Grace in your life – to recognize and claim the help the universe is constantly offering you. \nDavid Richo\, PhD\, is a therapist and author who leads popular workshops on personal and spiritual growth. Since 1976\, Richo has been a licensed marriage\, family\, and child counselor in California. In addition to practicing psychotherapy\, Richo teaches courses at Santa Barbara City College and the University of California Berkeley at Berkeley\, and has taught at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur\, Pacifica Graduate Institute\, and Santa Barbara Graduate Institute. He is a clinical supervisor for the Community Counseling Center in Santa Barbara\, California.”

SUMMARY:The Stumpers Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Stumpers Book Launch \nwith Karima Cammell \nThursday\, November 20\, 5:30-7:30PM \nCastle in the Air\, 1805 Fourth Street\, Berkeley \nFree \nhttp://blog.castleintheair.biz/2014/11/we-grow-better-together-stumpers-book.html \nhttp://www.thestumpers.com \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZy1ncKAa4o \n  \n“It makes me so happy to share my latest creation with you – perhaps you can come to the party? \nThe Stumpers is my new children’s picture book about togetherness and the joy of working toward one’s dreams. It follows the life of a cozy family of gnome-like people and all the good things they enjoy as they live in harmony with their world. The the tale grew organically out of making the dolls and their forest home in my studio. \nMusic is an important part of my life\, and it’s part of the Stumpers’ world too\, so it was such a treat to include an original song in the e-book version of The Stumpers. The Stumpers’ Frolic is played by the talented Laura Cortese\, who also narrates the e-book. As an added treat\, Laura will be at the launch party\, where she and I will chat about creativity\, making art\, and working together on this project. \nThe Stumpers is my sixth book with Dromedary Press\, a publishing company I started with the goal of making beautiful books exactly the way I envisioned them. No one\, whether they’re an independent or one of the big houses\, knows what the future holds for book publishing\, but one thing that’s clear to me is that great things are possible when we work together. SUMMARY:Visiting the Cucuteni with artist Christopher Castle
DESCRIPTION:Visiting the Cucuteni \nwith artist Christopher Castle \nSunday\, November 9\, 1:00-3:00PM \nSilk Road House\, 1944 University Avenue\, Berkeley\, 510-981-0700 \nhttp://www.silkroadhouse.org \nhttp://christophercastle.com \nhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cucuteni-Trypillian_culture \n  \n“Artist Christopher Castle will talk about his experience of the little known 7\,000 year old Cucuteni culture of Romania\, one of the key Old European people and some of the first farmers. He will show slides\, discussing Cucuteni art and religion together with his visual work that delves into their inner meaning. \nHe recently returned from an artist’s residency in Moldavia\, northeastern Romania\, where he attended an international symposium on the development of scripts entitled From Symbols to Signs. The Cucuteni were one of several peoples whose symbolic marks were seminal in the genesis of writing. \nThe thousands of small clay female figurines found by archaeologists are signs of a cosmology that was focused on a birth-giving\, nourishing\, death-wielding and regenerating force in the universe\, a Goddess. The form and surface decoration of Cucuteni pottery and figurines point to a life that included observing the cycles of nature\, invoking the fertility of the land\, and even a sensibility to subtle geomantic energies. \nChristopher demonstrates through his own work with this ancient material a visible manifestation of a consciousness that integrates mind with nature\, an understanding that is so badly needed in our times to counter the extremes of environmental exploitation. Further he explores the powerful potential that these mysterious artifacts hold as shamanic devices for healing. He will introduce also some other areas of his work that have lead him to this treasure trove of ancient art. \nCastle’s work as an artist is an exploration of the relationship between humanity and nature with a distinct slant towards ancient mystical traditions. He has traveled extensively studying ancient sites and artifacts from many cultures. His paintings and graphic works open a doorway to the lost knowledge these places and objects contain. Alongside his studio work\, he teaches environmental art in several Bay Area schools and creates murals focusing communities on their locally distinct natural ecology. He exhibits worldwide and his work is in many distinguished collections such as the British Museum\, the Ashmolean Museum and the National Galleries of Scotland and Wales. \nSilk Road House events are sponsored by the Silkroad Foundation.”

SUMMARY:The Many Voices of Authenticity
DESCRIPTION:The Many Voices of Authenticity \nwith Stuart Goodnick and Rob Schmidt\, Ph.D.\, Tayu Meditation Teachers \nThursday\, November 6\, 7:30PM \nMany Rivers Books and Tea\, 130 S. Main Street\, Sebastopol\, 707-829-8871 \nFree \nhttp://www.manyriversbooks.com/t11_1.html \n  \n“Breath is life.  The tangible physicality of voice\, produced through the breath of the human body\, is the expression of what is authentic in the vitality of our interior lives.  The spoken word is the expressive channel of the beating heart\, creative mind\, and vital body interacting with one another.  Words may lie\, but the body resists collusion in the lie\, which is evident in tone\, tension\, duration\, volume\, and other nuances of voice. \nConsider the following illustration: \nYou are in a company meeting where the boss is outlining a new plan.  He asks for everyone to offer an evaluation on a scale of one to ten.  The irritation and combativeness in his voice and manner make clear that he insists on nothing less than full agreement.  You think it is a terrible plan that will cost the company a great deal.  Your colleagues\, one by one\, offer their submission\, in voices ranging from the subdued to hollow enthusiasm.  Your turn comes\, and your intention to speak truth to power falters.  You hear your own voice\, as if in the distance\, croak out the word ‘ten.’ \nThe voices we most want to hide from others\, or deny to ourselves\, are those which have yet to demonstrate courage\, sophistication\, coolness\, or any apparently desirable attribute.  In denying them\, we fail to appreciate that they are already speaking authentically. They honestly express the condition of our inner state at that given moment.  The challenge is to find how the perspectives that give rise to these voices can actually learn\, develop\, grow and expand. \nCo-Meditation\, a unique two-person meditation practice\, provides a safe and gentle context in which our many inner voices can be productively articulated. Co-Meditation creates a profound mutual space in which our inner content can be voiced and heard without judgment! Our voices deepen and expand in authenticity as we gain practice in courageously inhabiting what we find ourselves saying. Join us for a fun day of embodying voice ever more powerfully! \nRob Schmidt\, Ph.D.\, and Stuart Goodnick helped found Many Rivers\, as a project of Tayu Meditation Center. They studied and practiced the alchemical transformation of consciousness for decades with Tayu founder Robert Daniel Ennis.”

SUMMARY:Medieval Matters: Hildegard Of Bingen: Medieval Lessons For Modern Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Medieval Matters: Hildegard Of Bingen: Medieval Lessons For Modern Medicine \nwith Victoria Sweet \nThursday\, November 6\, 7:30-9:00PM \nBishop Auditorium\, Lathrop Library\, Stanford University\, Palo Alto \nFree\, no registration required \nhttp://arts.stanford.edu/event/medieval-matters-hildegard-of-bingen-medieval-lessons-for-modern-medicine \nhttp://library.stanford.edu/libraries/lathrop/about \nhttp://www.victoriasweet.com \n  \n“For more than 2\,500 years\, doctors and patients understood the body in the same way: it was like a plant\, with its own natural power of growth\, maturation\, and healing. The doctor was like a gardener\, using the four elements of earth\, air\, water\, and fire to remove what was in the way of that power and optimize the conditions of health. Then\, suddenly\, at the end of the 19th century\, this model was replaced by a different idea: the body was more like a machine than a plant\, and the doctor more like a mechanic\, fixing or replacing a broken part. The old idea\, however\, did not disappear; it dove down into the collective unconscious\, and we still miss it. \n  \nIn this talk\, Victoria Sweet will draw on her study of Hildegard of Bingen – the 12th century abbess\, mystic\, composer\, theologian\, and medical practitioner – to explore this pre-modern model of medicine\, and to show how it is useful even today\, as a second perspective on health and illness\, curing\, caring\, and healing. \n  \nVictoria Sweet \nAssociate Clinical Professor of Medicine\, UCSF \nVictoria Sweet practiced medicine for twenty years at Laguna Honda Hospital and received a PhD in medical history. In her book\, God’s Hotel: A Doctor\, a Hospital\, and a Pilgrimage to the Heart of Medicine\, Sweet laid out her evidence – in stories of her patients and her hospital – for new ideas about medical practice. SUMMARY:Healing Plants and Nourishing Foods
DESCRIPTION:Healing Plants and Nourishing Foods \nwith Summer Ashley and Sarah Kate of The Great Kosmic Kitchen \nWednesday\, November 5\, 6:00-8:00PM \nHomestead Apothecary\, 486 49th Street\,  #C\, Oakland\, 510-495-6549 \n$30 \nhttp://homesteadapothecary.com/healing-plants-nourishing-foods \nhttp://www.thegreatkosmickitchen.com \n  \n“In this workshop\, The Great Kosmic Kitchen will be sharing witchy recipes\, how to easily incorporate medicinal herbs (and fungi) into your daily life\, and why we shouldn’t be afraid of healthy fats! At the end of the workshop we will put everything we learned in bowl\, and enjoy a small meal together. \n  \nYou can look forward to learning about: \nTraditional food preparation \nEating to nourish the spirit \nEnergetics of Fall and Winter \nWhy our body needs healthy fats \nAdaptogenic roots and anti-inflammatory herbs \nSoaking grains and making medicinal soups \n  \nSarah and Summer first met in college\, where they laid the foundation for The University of Central Florida’s very first community garden. They grew heirloom varietals\, medicinal herbs\, perennial vegetables\, and even ate the weeds! The constant abundance in the garden allowed them to come home and experiment in their own kitchens. \nAfter being introduced to the world of plants\, they both set out on journeys to deepen this connection. Together they studied permaculture at The Regenerative Design Institute in Bolinas\, California and Herbalisim at The Florida School of Holistic Living. Summer then ventured to Vermont to apprentice with Rosemary Gladstar\, which led her to study at The California School of Herbal Studies in 2013. During this time\, Sarah interned at Herb Pharm in Oregon\, apprenticed at Tassjara’s Zen Kitchen\, and then went on to study Amazonian plants in the Peruvian jungle. \nIn gratitude for these immersive experiences\, Sarah and Summer share the wisdom they learn along the way. The Great Kosmic Kitchen showcases the art of incorporating plants\, traditional preparations\, and sacred rituals into daily life.”

SUMMARY:Lucid Dreaming: An Open Inquiry
DESCRIPTION:Lucid Dreaming: An Open Inquiry \nfacilitated by Paul Sheldon and Meredith Sabini \nSunday\, November 2\, 1:00-4:00PM \nThe Dream Institute of Northern California\, 1672 University Avenue\, Berkeley\, 510-845-1767 \n$45 per session \nhttp://dream-institute.org/calendar-of-events \n  \n“Lucid dreaming is the experience of awareness that one is dreaming\, an altered state that comes naturally to some\, with practice to others. This program begins as a conversation between two people who are acquainted with contemporary Western and ancient Eastern literature on the topic and also have had personal experiences of lucidity. Our intent is that the conversation will open out to include those attending\, so that a broad range of relevant themes and questions can be explored: When does lucidity occur? What purposes does it seem to have? How is it similar to shamanic journeying or out of body phenomena? Is it possible to cultivate lucidity? Why does this rather unusual experience attract heroism and boasting\, as if it’s a spiritual sport? What makes lucidity so popular today? Can we enter deeper states of spiritual existence and sacred experience through lucid dreaming? \nPaul Sheldon holds an MA degree in Human Development and is an internationally recognized authority on lucid dreaming; he holds a lifetime college teaching credential.”

SUMMARY:Real Ghost’s Stories: Life After Death and Before
DESCRIPTION:Real Ghost’s Stories: Life After Death and Before \nwith Scout Bartlett \nThursday\, October 30\, 7:30PM \nEast West Bookstore\, 324 Castro Street\, Mountain View \nFree\, but please RSVP to 650-988-9800 \nhttp://www.eastwest.com/events_2014_october#30 \nhttp://www.ifidknownthen.com \n  \n“Before birth\, we prepare for our incarnate lessons. After death\, we review what we learned. How we live during life is where the growth and understanding expand\, and that’s the point of incarnating. Practical mystic Scout Bartlett has spoken with a wide array of ‘spirits beyond the veil\,’ bringing peace to loved ones\, carrying messages\, and gathering wisdom. What would these Halloween ghosts have to say\, if you could hear them? ‘Don’t be busy being dead\, while you’re still alive\, it’s a waste of time…’ said one.”
