SUMMARY:Including Sustainable Menstrual Options in Health Education
DESCRIPTION:Including Sustainable Menstrual Options in Health Education \npresented by Natural Flow \nWednesday\, October 15\, 12:30-1:30PM \nImpact Hub Oakland\, 2323 Broadway\, Oakland\, 510-858-2323 \nFree \nhttp://oakland.impacthub.net/event/including-sustainable-menstrual-options-in-health-education+/ \nhttp://naturalflow.us \n  \n“What would it look like if our introduction to menstruation was affirmative\, comprehensive\, and free from shame? \n  \nWhat would it look like if choices beyond disposable pads and tampons were presented from the beginning? Imagine if menstrual education led with empowerment\, ritual\, and joy. \n  \nShifting the conversation around menstruation can ensure young people have greater agency to make decisions about what is best for their health\, their bodies\, and the earth they inhabit. \n  \nThis is the fourth lunchtime discussion hosted by Natural Flow. Including sustainable menstruation in health education had a lot of energy behind it at our last meeting\, so we’re holding space for these critical conversations to further develop. \n  \nWe invite the wisdom and perspectives of teachers\, parents\, users of sustainable menstrual options\, youth advocates\, and anyone who feels intrigued by this topic. Come share your experiences\, stories\, ideas\, and best-practices. \nAll are welcome to attend\, regardless of menstruation status or any other factor.”

SUMMARY:Shamanizing For The Culture
DESCRIPTION:Shamanizing For The Culture \nwith Meredith Sabini \nFriday\, October 17\,  2:00-5:00PM \nThe Dream Institute of Northern California\, 1672 University Avenue\, Berkeley\, 510-845-1767 \n$45\, please RSVP \nhttp://dream-institute.org/calendar-of-events/#shamanizing \n  \n“Shamanism is a cultural practice present throughout history that draws on dreams and visions. This program begins with an account of the sophisticated dream practices of the Iroquois and the Achuar of Equador\, which have both been compared with modern psychotherapy. Indigenous societies also may have had culture shamans who received guidance for their people as a whole. This will be illustrated by contemporary examples of Oglala Sioux Black Elk and C. G. Jung\, each of whom had sweeping visionary dreams about impending large-scale disasters; and the examples of Harriet Tubman and Taoist rainmaker Kiao-chou\, who enacted effective rituals for societies in distress. Activated at times of social upheaval\, the shamanic archetype may also bring dreams and visions to those not functioning as healers. Examples of ‘big dreams’ from people today will be presented for discussion and guidelines for distinguishing big or collective dreams from ordinary personal ones will be given. \nInstructor: Meredith Sabini\, PhD\, psychologist and founder-director of The Dream Institute\, has a longstanding interest in cross-cultural healing modalities.”

The Tarot suits\, commonly know as the Minor Arcana cards\, have the same elemental attributions. Connecting Tarot to the Chakra system can guide us to choose meditations\, home remedies and yoga like exercises to integrate lessons from the cards. \nCome explore the possibilities by learning about this fascinating connection. \nLearn how to integrate Tarot into your healing arts practices. \nBooks and decks will be available for signing. \nNon-practitioners are welcome. \nThrough bodywork sessions and tarot card readings\, Miriam Jacobs teaches how to live more comfortably and self-expressively in the world. Her work brings about a profoundly deep healing. Miriam uniquely synthesizes ancient and modern methods of healing and grounds them in the body. She is the creator of Polarity Wellness Tarot\, the first body based deck. Her new book Tarot and the Chakras: Opening New Dimensions to Healers\, takes the concept of the deck even further. \nMiriam’s bodywork may include polarity\, cranial sacral\, reflexology and massage. Her tarot readings help you make choices and affirm what you already know. She is also available for workshops\, Tarot parties and in person/phone/skype readings.”

SUMMARY:Litquake
DESCRIPTION:Litquake \nSan Francisco’s Literary Festival \nFriday\, October 10-Saturday\, October 18 \nsee website for detailed schedule of events \nhttp://www.litquake.org \n  \n  \n“Litquake seeks to foster interest in literature for people of all ages\, perpetuate a sense of literary community\, and provide a vibrant forum for Bay Area writing as a complement to the city’s music\, film\, and cultural festivals. Litquake is a project of the Litquake Foundation\, a 501(c)3 nonprofit registered in the state of California. \n  \nFrom Litstock to Litquake \nOriginally hatched over beers at the Edinburgh Castle pub in 1999\, Litstock debuted as a free one-day reading series in a fog-bound Golden Gate Park. Local writers Jane Ganahl and Jack Boulware realized quickly that booklovers craved something grander. Against the backdrop of a technology-crazed San Francisco\, writers were still drawn to the city\, and readers still appreciated the written word. \n  \nIn 2002\, the festival was rechristened Litquake\, and began expanding its programming to include all elements of the Bay Area literary scene. Taking a cue from a USA Today report that San Franciscans spend twice the nation’s average on books and booze\, in 2004\, the festival inaugurated an immediately successful closing night Lit Crawl bacchanal throughout the city’s Mission District. \n  \nPopular demand drove Litquake to expand even further\, adding more national and international authors\, youth programs\, classroom visits and book giveaways\, monthly literary Epicenters\, and special localized editions of the Lit Crawl now held each year in Manhattan\, Austin\, Seattle\, Brooklyn\, Iowa City\, Los Angeles\, Miami\, and London. \n  \nWhether it’s poets reciting in a cathedral\, authors discussing science versus religion in a library\, or novelists reading in a beekeeping supply store\, the goal remains the same: whet a broad range of literary appetites\, present the literary fare in a variety of traditional and unlikely venues\, and make it vivid\, real\, and entertaining. Now grown to the largest independent literary festival on the West Coast\, Litquake continues its mission as a nine-day literary spectacle for booklovers\, complete with cutting-edge panel discussions\, unique cross-media events\, and hundreds of readings.”

SUMMARY:The Copernicus Complex: Are We Special in the Cosmos?
DESCRIPTION:The Copernicus Complex: Are We Special in the Cosmos? \nwith Caleb Scharf \nPart of the Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series \nWednesday\, October 8\, 7:00PM \nSmithwick Theatre\, Foothill College\, 12345 El Monte Road\, Los Altos Hills \nAdmission Free\, Parking $3 \nhttp://www.foothill.edu/ast/ast_story.php?sr=2&rec_id=3508 \nhttp://www.foothill.edu/ast/ast_news.php \nhttp://www.astrosociety.org/education/silicon-valley-astronomy-lectures \nhttp://www.foothill.edu/news/maps.php \nhttp://user.astro.columbia.edu/~caleb/Caleb_Scharf_Homepage/Caleb_Scharf.html \n  \n“As part of the 15th annual Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series\, Columbia University Director of Astrobiology Caleb Scharf\, Ph.D.\, who is considered one of the leading scholars at the interface of astronomy and biology\, will discuss The Copernicus Complex: Are We Special in the Cosmos?\, an illustrated\, non-technical lecture Wednesday\, October 8\, at 7:00PM in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. Admission is free and the public is invited. Seating is first come\, first served. Arrive early to locate parking. \n  \nIs humanity on Earth special or unexceptional? For the first time in human history\, we stand poised to answer this question from a scientific perspective. Extraordinary discoveries in astronomy and biology have revealed a universe filled with endlessly diverse planetary systems\, and a picture of life as a phenomenon intimately linked with the most fundamental aspects of physics. But just where these discoveries will lead us is not yet clear. We may need to find a way to see past the mediocre status that Copernicus assigned to us 500 years ago. To do that we need to come to grips with some of the latest scientific research\, from the microscopic to the cosmic\, which Dr. Scharf will set out in this talk. \n  \nScharf is the author of the widely praised popular book Gravity’s Engines\, which was the basis of the BBC/Science Channel documentary\, Swallowed by a Black Hole. His textbook\, Extrasolar Planets and Astrobiology\, won the 2011 Chambliss Prize. In addition to more than 100 scientific research papers\, he has written non-technical articles for Scientific American\, The New Yorker\, Science\, and other publications\, and has been interviewed frequently for television. SUMMARY:Shamanizing for the Culture: A new healing modality
DESCRIPTION:Shamanizing for the Culture: A new healing modality \nfacilitated by Richard Russo and Meredith Sabini \nSunday\, October 5\, 1:00-5:00PM \nThe Dream Institute of Northern California\, 1672 University Avenue\, Berkeley\, 510-845-1767 \n$60 \nhttp://dream-institute.org/calendar-of-events \n  \n“Shamanism is a cultural practice present throughout history that draws on dreams and visions. \n  \nActivated at times of social upheaval\, the shamanic archetype may also bring dreams and visions to those not functioning as healers. Examples of ‘big dreams’ from people today will be recounted\, along with guidelines for distinguishing big or collective dreams from ordinary personal ones. \n  \nThis program will also cover Deep Dreaming\, a method developed at The Dream Institute based on field and emergence theories. In it\, ordinary single dreams told during light trance are woven together to form a fresh narrative\, which is then explored as if it were a dream for the culture. Themes that have appeared over the years will be mentioned and a sequence of four dreams about homelessness presented. The healing effects that this mode of sharing dreams can have will be discussed. This program demonstrates that the dreaming mind gives us access to the psyche of the culture so we have ways of influencing its suffering and benefiting from its vitality. \n  \nRichard Russo\, MA\, an artist\, author\, and dream educator for over 30 years\, is past president of the IASD and Associate Director at The Dream Institute.\nMeredith Sabini\, PhD\, psychologist and founder-director of The Dream Institute\, has a longstanding interest in cross-cultural healing modalities.”

He went further north than anyone before him\, and though he would not return from this voyage\, most of his men would. The discoveries they made were not only of new lands and people\, but also of the extreme and threatening conditions that would challenge mariners sailing the west coast for hundreds of years to come.\nCelebrate national Hispanic Heritage Month with Park Ranger-led programs for the whole family.”

SUMMARY:Dreams About Others: How to Recognize Them
DESCRIPTION:Dreams About Others: How to Recognize Them \nfacilitated by Meredith Sabini \nSaturday\, September 20\, 10:00AM-1:00PM \nThe Dream Institute of Northern California\, 1672 University Avenue\, Berkeley\, 510-845-1767 \n$40 \nhttp://dream-institute.org/calendar-of-events \n  \n“People familiar to us appear in dreams rather frequently. How are we to know if the dream content pertains to them\, or to ourselves? Recent studies suggest that perhaps 10% of our dreams are about others and that introverts may be more likely to have such dreams than extroverts. \n  \nThe instructor has been collecting dreams about others and found they have a ‘just so’ quality\, with the dreamer typically observing a scene that resembles waking life. Six specific features of these outward-facing dreams will be presented. Jung originally distinguished between subjective or personal dreams and objective or outward-facing dreams in 1917\, showing how to distinguish between them based on the current status of the relationship. \n  \nUsing his examples and those from the instructor’s collection\, we will look at three kinds of dreams; those in which a dream figure symbolizes an aspect of the dreamer; those in which a dream brings to light something about our relationship with the person shown; and those which provide information actually about the person. Participants are welcome to bring in dreams about others for discussion.\nThe goal of this program is to correct the overly personalistic (narcissistic) bias of modern dream theories and to broaden our understanding of the dreaming mind\, which is quite capable of distinguishing between self and other and helping us tend our human relations.”

SUMMARY:Artemis: The Indomitable Spirit in Everywoman
DESCRIPTION:Artemis: The Indomitable Spirit in Everywoman \nwith author Jean Shinoda Bolen \nFriday\, September 19\, 7:00PM \nBook Passage\, 51 Tamal Vista Boulevard\, Corte Madera\, 415-927-0960 \nFree event\, book can be purchased for $22.95 \nhttp://bookpassage.com/event/jean-shinoda-bolen-artemis \nhttp://www.jeanshinodabolen.com \n  \n“In Artemis: The Indomitable Spirit in Everywoman\, Jean Shinoda Bolen invites women and girls to discover the tenacity and courage of the Artemis archetype and how it can be tapped to live authentically. \n  \nTo tell the story\, Bolen delves deeply into the myth of Atalanta\, the famous hunter and runner in ancient Greek mythology\, a mortal woman who is identified with Artemis the Greek Goddess of the Hunt and Moon. Atalanta began life abandoned and left to die because she was born a girl. She faced the Calydon Boar and drew first blood; she was the runner who would demand to be beaten in a footrace by the man who could claim her as his bride. She exemplifies the indomitable spirit in competent\, courageous girls and in the women they become. This is grit\, the passion and persistence to go the distance\, to survive\, and to succeed. \n  \nShe includes many real-life stories as well as mythological and fictional examples of women who are similar to Atalanta\, including among others Princess Merida from the animated film Brave and Katniss from The Hunger Games. Artemis and Atalanta are the means through which readers can navigate their own personal exploration to become their authentic selves. Bolen dedicates this book to women and girls who embody the archetype of Artemis\, who discover her uncrushable spirit in themselves or others. \n  \nJean Shinoda Bolen\, M. D\, is a psychiatrist\, Jungian analyst and an internationally known author and speaker. Her books include The Tao of Psychology\, Goddesses in Everywoman\, Gods in Everyman\, Ring of Power\, Crossing to Avalon\, Close to the Bone\, The Millionth Circle\, Goddesses in Older Women\, Crones Don’t Whine\, Urgent Message from Mother\, Like a Tree\, and Moving Toward the Millionth Circle. She is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a former clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California at San Francisco\, a past board member of the Ms. Foundation for Women and the International Transpersonal Association.”
