But excitement is building as the boys of summer become the play-off boys of October – with the end of the Major League Baseball season. Please join two veteran physics teachers as they explain – and demonstrate – the physical nuances of the game: how a curve ball curves\, why a 550-foot homer is so unlikely\, how the half-millisecond collision of ball-on-bat is so beautifully complex. From aerodynamics to energy conservation\, and from Magnus force to center of percussion\, you be the umpire as simple physics illuminates our national pastime. \n \nTucker Hiatt\, long-time physics teacher\, Stanford Visiting Scholar (emeritus!)\, and Wonderfest Founding Director *AND* Marc ‘Zeke’ Kossover\, long-time physics teacher\, Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow to the National Science Foundation\, and Teacher in Residence and Co-Director of the Leadership Program at the Eploratorium.”

SUMMARY:Dreams About Others: How to Recognize Them
DESCRIPTION:Dreams About Others: How to Recognize Them \nfacilitated by Meredith Sabini \nSaturday\, September 20\, 10:00AM-1:00PM \nThe Dream Institute of Northern California\, 1672 University Avenue\, Berkeley\, 510-845-1767 \n$40 \nhttp://dream-institute.org/calendar-of-events \n  \n“People familiar to us appear in dreams rather frequently. How are we to know if the dream content pertains to them\, or to ourselves? Recent studies suggest that perhaps 10% of our dreams are about others and that introverts may be more likely to have such dreams than extroverts. \n  \nThe instructor has been collecting dreams about others and found they have a ‘just so’ quality\, with the dreamer typically observing a scene that resembles waking life. Six specific features of these outward-facing dreams will be presented. Jung originally distinguished between subjective or personal dreams and objective or outward-facing dreams in 1917\, showing how to distinguish between them based on the current status of the relationship. \n  \nUsing his examples and those from the instructor’s collection\, we will look at three kinds of dreams; those in which a dream figure symbolizes an aspect of the dreamer; those in which a dream brings to light something about our relationship with the person shown; and those which provide information actually about the person. Participants are welcome to bring in dreams about others for discussion.\nThe goal of this program is to correct the overly personalistic (narcissistic) bias of modern dream theories and to broaden our understanding of the dreaming mind\, which is quite capable of distinguishing between self and other and helping us tend our human relations.”

SUMMARY:Artemis: The Indomitable Spirit in Everywoman
DESCRIPTION:Artemis: The Indomitable Spirit in Everywoman \nwith author Jean Shinoda Bolen \nFriday\, September 19\, 7:00PM \nBook Passage\, 51 Tamal Vista Boulevard\, Corte Madera\, 415-927-0960 \nFree event\, book can be purchased for $22.95 \nhttp://bookpassage.com/event/jean-shinoda-bolen-artemis \nhttp://www.jeanshinodabolen.com \n  \n“In Artemis: The Indomitable Spirit in Everywoman\, Jean Shinoda Bolen invites women and girls to discover the tenacity and courage of the Artemis archetype and how it can be tapped to live authentically. \n  \nTo tell the story\, Bolen delves deeply into the myth of Atalanta\, the famous hunter and runner in ancient Greek mythology\, a mortal woman who is identified with Artemis the Greek Goddess of the Hunt and Moon. Atalanta began life abandoned and left to die because she was born a girl. She faced the Calydon Boar and drew first blood; she was the runner who would demand to be beaten in a footrace by the man who could claim her as his bride. She exemplifies the indomitable spirit in competent\, courageous girls and in the women they become. This is grit\, the passion and persistence to go the distance\, to survive\, and to succeed. \n  \nShe includes many real-life stories as well as mythological and fictional examples of women who are similar to Atalanta\, including among others Princess Merida from the animated film Brave and Katniss from The Hunger Games. Artemis and Atalanta are the means through which readers can navigate their own personal exploration to become their authentic selves. Bolen dedicates this book to women and girls who embody the archetype of Artemis\, who discover her uncrushable spirit in themselves or others. \n  \nJean Shinoda Bolen\, M. D\, is a psychiatrist\, Jungian analyst and an internationally known author and speaker. Her books include The Tao of Psychology\, Goddesses in Everywoman\, Gods in Everyman\, Ring of Power\, Crossing to Avalon\, Close to the Bone\, The Millionth Circle\, Goddesses in Older Women\, Crones Don’t Whine\, Urgent Message from Mother\, Like a Tree\, and Moving Toward the Millionth Circle. She is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a former clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California at San Francisco\, a past board member of the Ms. Foundation for Women and the International Transpersonal Association.”

There will also be available the tools needed to develop a family tree for those interested\, and those with family buried at Evergreen will be encouraged to tell their ancestor’s stories orally so that they can be added to the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History’s archives. In addition\, hard copies of the location of all the plots and names of the people buried at Evergreen will be accessible\, as well as someone to help find specific plots. \nThis Family Legacy Day we will be honoring the Jones Family\, brothers Albert and Rholandus and their mother\, Mary. \nWhile attending\, visitors will be able to see the grounds keeping and preservation work that is being done by many local volunteers and the Homeless Service Center\, which sends us a team of volunteers every week.* \nLegacy Day will feature a Pop Up Museum with the theme being objects and photos related to Evergreen Cemetery or the people buried there. The Pop Up Museum is a temporary exhibit created by the people who show up to participate. It works by choosing a theme and venue and then inviting people to bring an object on-topic to share. If you have a historical photo or object that relates to Evergreen Cemetery please bring it and put it on display! We need you (and your objects/photos) to make this work! \nCome make new friends\, run into old friends\, and learn about families rooted here in Santa Cruz; everyone is welcome. \n*For those who want to arrive early\, from 10:00AM until noon\, volunteers will be restoring some historic tombstones. The public is invited to observe our volunteers hard at work as they restore our cemetery.”

Some members are professionally trained in astronomy\, others are just starting and have never looked through a telescope before. One thing that we all have in common is an interest in the sky. \n  \nThe PAS holds meetings on the second Friday of each month at 7:30PM on the campus of Foothill College in Los Altos Hills\, CA (between San Jose and Palo Alto).  The meetings are usually held in Room 5015\, next to Parking Lot 5 (see map). Each meeting features a speaker (or speakers) bringing us up to date on different topics in astronomy. The public is welcome to attend these meetings; there is no charge to attend.  Note\, however\, that there is a $3 charge for parking – visitor parking permits are available from the machines in the parking lots.  Dispensers accept one-dollar bills and quarters; bring exact change. Please do not park in spaces marked Staff – you will be ticketed! \n  \nAs part of its commitment to bringing astronomy to the public\, the Peninsula Astronomical Society operates the Foothill College Observatory http://www.pastro.org/dnn/Observatory/FoothillObservatory.aspx. \nThe Observatory is staffed by members of the society who volunteer to conduct the regularly scheduled public programs.\nIn addition to operating the Foothill Observatory\, the PAS has its own observatory in the nearby Santa Cruz Mountains. This location has AC power and room for members to set up their own telescopes at our monthly star parties. This site is also the home of the society’s 12″ telescope\, available for member use after a checkout.”
