SUMMARY:Everything Matters: Helium - Tales from the Periodic Table
DESCRIPTION:Everything Matters: Helium \nTales from the Periodic Table \nwith Ron Hipschman\nThursday\, January 29\, 7:30PM\nPhyllis C. Wattis Webcast Studio\, Exploratorium\, Pier 15\, San Francisco\nIncluded with museum admission\nAdults Only (18+) \nhttp://www.exploratorium.edu/visit/calendar/everything-matters-helium-jan-29-2015 \nhttp://www.exploratorium.edu/about/staff/scientists/ron-hipschman\nHelium is the second most abundant element in the universe. Then why is there a global helium shortage? Follow the trail of our spendthrift affair with this elusive noble gas\, and find out why its future remains up in the air. Learn about helium’s many uses\, from lifting parade floats to cooling magnets in MRI machines\, and take part in a lighthearted experiment to raise – and lower – the pitch of your voice with the help of helium and sulfur hexafluoride. \nThe periodic table outlines the fundamental building blocks of all known matter in the universe. Composed of irreducible atoms\, these elements arrived from the earliest reports of the Big Bang\, the fusion wombs of stars and supernova\, and collisions between interstellar matter and cosmic rays – as well as through artificial production in the lab. A scant 4.9% of the universe (the rest being dark matter and energy)\, the 118 elements currently arrayed on the periodic table display unique and yet beautifully related properties and behaviors. To us\, they mean everything: from iron to uranium\, their discovery and use have shaped the course of human history. \nCome be in your elements with Exploratorium host and scientific raconteur Ron Hipschman. Follow tales of intrigue and invention\, join in dynamic demonstrations\, and uncover fascinating connections between individual elements and our collective experience.

SUMMARY:A Chosen Exile: A History of Racial Passing in American Life with Allyson Hobbs
DESCRIPTION:A Chosen Exile: A History of Racial Passing in American Life\nwith Allyson Hobbs\nThursday\, January 29\, 7:30PM\nKepler’s Books\, 1010 El Camino Real\, Menlo Park\, 650-324-4321 \nFree \nhttp://www.keplers.com/event/allyson-hobbs \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1481469192117994 \nhttp://history.stanford.edu/hobbs_allyson \n  \nJoin us for a look back at the history of racial passing\, and a topical discussion of race and identity problems in America today. \nFor centuries\, countless African Americans passed as white\, leaving behind families and friends\, roots and community\, almost always for the benefits of expanded opportunity and mobility. But along with these brighter possibilities came grief\, loneliness\, and isolation that often outweighed the rewards. A Chosen Exile is a beautiful\, extensively researched book\, with historical photographs and over 82 pages of notes. \nAs racial relations in america have evolved so has the significance of passing. To pass as white in the antebellum South was to escape the shackles of slavery. After emancipation\, many African Americans came to regard passing as a form of betrayal\, a selling of one’s birthright. When the initially hopeful period of Reconstruction proved short-lived\, passing became an opportunity to defy Jim Crow and strike out on one’s own. \nAllyson Hobbs is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Stanford. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard and she received a Ph.D. with distinction from the University of Chicago. Hobbs teaches courses on African American history\, African American women’s history and 20th century American history. Her research interests include American social and cultural history\, racial mixture\, identity formation\, migration and urbanization\, and the intersections of race\, class and gender.

SUMMARY:Armistead Maupin: The Days of Anna Madrigal
DESCRIPTION:Armistead Maupin: The Days of Anna Madrigal\nsponsored by Peninsula Arts & Letters\nWednesday\, January 28\, 7:30PM\, Seating Area opens at 6:30PM\nKepler’s Books\, 1010 El Camino Real\, Menlo Park\, 650-324-4321 \n$15 event only\, $25 includes book \nhttp://www.keplers.com/armistead-maupin \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/723085577783009 \nhttp://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/959556 \nhttp://www.armisteadmaupin.com \nThink you have to make the trek all the way up to San Francisco to see Armistead Maupin?  Think again!!  Peninsula Arts & Letters is honored to host Armistead Maupin at Kepler’s Books on Wednesday\, January 28 at 7:30PM. \nIt’s a rare thing for a book to capture a time and place as beautifully as Armistead Maupin’s original Tales of the City series did for 1970s San Francisco.  In the era of mood rings and discos\, Maupin created a cast of characters he lovingly calls the Logical Family (as opposed to the biological family). Originally a newspaper serial in the San Francisco Chronicle\, Maupin’s series started in 1976 and ends in 2013 with his final book\, The Days of Anna Madrigal. Whether you are a child of the ’70s who wants to reconnect with a bygone era or a first-time reader who wants to experience how the ties of love and friendship transcend decades\, you will not be disappointed by tales of Mary Ann Singleton\, Michael Tolliver\, Mrs. Madrigal\, and the rest of the groovy crew that populates Maupin’s San Francisco.  Gay\, straight\, bi\, or anything else\, you will feel like a member of the Logical Family by the end. \nThe timelessness and popularity of the series lives on in a stage-musical version in May 2011 and Armistead’s continued recognition\, including the Lamdba Literary Foundation’s Pioneer Award that he received in 2012 and the Visionary Award at the Legacy Gala he received in November 2014 for the first adaptation of the novels.  Featuring Laura Linney\, Olympia Dukakis\, Chloe Webb\, Marcus D’Amico and Donald Moffat\, the show garnered the highest ratings ever for a dramatic program on PBS. \nCome help us celebrate the ninth and final novel in Armistead’s classic Tales of the City series\, a triumphant resolution to a saga of urban family life that has enchanted and enlightened readers around the world since 1976.\nCheers! \nTicket Information: \n$25: Premier Ticket. Includes 1 copy of The Days of Anna Madrigal\, premier seating\, and priority in the signing line.\n$15: General Admission. Does not include book. \nThe book will be available for pickup at the event.

SUMMARY:No One Here Gets Out Alive: The Science\, Politics\, and Law of Death and Dying
DESCRIPTION:No One Here Gets Out Alive: The Science\, Politics\, and Law of Death and Dying \nThursday\, January 15\, 7:00PM \nBay Observatory Gallery\, Exploratorium\, Pier 15\, San Francisco\nIncluded with museum admission.\nAdults Only (18+)\nhttp://www.exploratorium.edu/visit/calendar/no-one-here-gets-out-alive-jan-15-2015 \n  \nIs there a constitutional right to “physician-assisted suicide”? What about a “dignified death” – and what is a dignified death? Should terminally ill patients facing mental incapacitation or unbearable pain have access to fatal ingestion – also known as physician aid in dying? Or would that jeopardize our society’s progress toward more compassionate\, comfort-based care? \nIn California\, a person is legally dead when all brain functions\, or all circulatory and respiratory functions\, irrevocably cease. In cases of brain death\, a person on life support may still breathe or maintain a heartbeat\, obscuring the boundaries between life and death. And in other cases\, a person may be alive in the legal sense\, persisting in a vegetative state\, but only through medical support. Physicians are compelled to make every intervention to save a life\, regardless of expense or prognosis. And yet there are times when treatments are considered unhelpful\, unwanted\, or at worst\, to interfere with a patient’s autonomy over the dying process. \nJoin host David Faigman and Dr. John Luce and Dr. Laura Petrillo of the University of California at San Francisco to discuss the facts\, legal ramifications\, and ethical concerns surrounding physician aid in dying. Learn how medical professionals can facilitate a peaceful and personally meaningful dying process\, and share your insights on this important topic. \nDr. John M. Luce is Emeritus Professor of Clinical Medicine and Anesthesia at UCSF. He is a member of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) and a Director of the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation. Dr. Luce’s research interests include biomedical ethics and treatment of the acute respiratory distress syndrome. He has authored or edited nine medical books and over two hundred medical articles\, editorials\, and book chapters. \nDr. Laura Petrillo is a Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellow at UCSF. She received her MD from UCSF in 2011 and completed internal medicine residency at UCSF in 2014. Dr. Petrillo has written for GeriPal\, a medical weblog on geriatrics and palliative care\, and is interested in medical decision-making and communication at the end of life. \nDavid L. Faigman is the John F. Digardi Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of California Hastings College of the Law and Director of the UCSF/UC Hastings Consortium on Law\, Science\, and Health Policy. An expert on the integration of scientific research into legal decision making\, Professor Faigman belonged to the National Academy of Sciences panel that investigated the scientific validity of polygraphs and is a member of the MacArthur Law and Neuroscience Network.

SUMMARY:The Gleaners and I
DESCRIPTION:The Gleaners and I \nMovie Night at SHED Grange \nWednesday\, January 14\, 6:00-8:30PM \nSHED Grange\, 25 North Street\, Healdsburg \nFree\, donations accepted \nhttp://healdsburgshed.com/events/movie-night-gleaners \nhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gleaners_and_I \nhttp://farmtopantry.org \n  \nGleaning is the act of collecting “seconds\,” or surplus crops for the hungry\, and has been a component of farming communities since agriculture began. Some ancient cultures even promoted gleaning as an early form of a welfare system. \nThe Gleaners and I is an award-winning documentary from the the idiosyncratic French filmmaker Agnes Varda\, and it takes its title from the iconic 1867 painting by Jean-Francois Millet that shows three women stooping in a wheat field to pick up sheaves and kernels left behind after the harvest. The film explores gleaning as not only an expression of community but a way to reduce waste and bring fresh produce to those who need it. \nHealdsburg has its own active gleaning community\, and on this after-hours movie night we’ll learn about the non-profit organization Farm to Pantry from its founder\, Melita Love. Come at 6:00PM to meet the gleaners and have a glass of wine\, beer\, or house kombucha and some movie snacks. \nAt 6:30PM we’ll introduce Melita and start the show. Admission is by donation. All proceeds will go to support Farm to Pantry. \n  \nFarm to Pantry was founded in 2008 as a volunteer organization with the belief that healthy food nurtures a healthy community. They are committed to developing and supporting local projects that provide healthy food to everyone\, especially those in the community who are hungry or have limited access to nutritious produce. Farm to Pantry is grateful for the support of all the gleaning volunteers\, property owners\, and donors in our community who have given generously of their time and resources to help them surpass 164\,00 pounds of gleaned produce.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting of the Peninsula Astronomical Society
DESCRIPTION:Monthly Meeting of the Peninsula Astronomical Society \nthe second Friday of each month\, 7:30PM \nRoom 5015\, next to Parking Lot 5\, Foothill College\, 12345 El Monte Road\, Los Altos Hills \nAdmission Free\, Parking $3 \nhttp://pastro.org/dnn \nhttp://www.foothill.edu/news/maps.php \n  \n“Check the website for details on the guest speaker for each month. \n  \nThe Peninsula Astronomical Society is a group of some 200 Bay Area astronomy enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds. Some members are professionally trained in astronomy\, others are just starting and have never looked through a telescope before. One thing that we all have in common is an interest in the sky. \n  \nThe PAS holds meetings on the second Friday of each month at 7:30PM on the campus of Foothill College in Los Altos Hills\, CA (between San Jose and Palo Alto).  The meetings are usually held in Room 5015\, next to Parking Lot 5 (see map). Each meeting features a speaker (or speakers) bringing us up to date on different topics in astronomy. The public is welcome to attend these meetings; there is no charge to attend.  Note\, however\, that there is a $3 charge for parking – visitor parking permits are available from the machines in the parking lots.  Dispensers accept one-dollar bills and quarters; bring exact change. Please do not park in spaces marked Staff – you will be ticketed! \n  \nAs part of its commitment to bringing astronomy to the public\, the Peninsula Astronomical Society operates the Foothill College Observatory http://www.pastro.org/dnn/Observatory/FoothillObservatory.aspx. \nThe Observatory is staffed by members of the society who volunteer to conduct the regularly scheduled public programs.\nIn addition to operating the Foothill Observatory\, the PAS has its own observatory in the nearby Santa Cruz Mountains. This location has AC power and room for members to set up their own telescopes at our monthly star parties. This site is also the home of the society’s 12″ telescope\, available for member use after a checkout.”
