We currently sponsor 6 balls a year at the Scottish Rite Temple in Oakland. \n  \nWe have live music played by the Brassworks of San Francisco\, a group of 5 brass horns and a drummer led by Frank Davis. The dances feature Victorian Waltzes\, Polkas\, Schottisches\, Mazurkas\, and set dances such as the Sir Roger de Coverley and the Congress of Vienna. \n  \nThe general format of the dance is three 40 minute and one 30 minute sessions of live music\, with three 20 minute breaks. We also occasionally have other entertainment during the breaks such as Morris dancing. The first set starts at 8:30 PM\, with the last set ending at Midnight. Starting at 7:45 PM is a dance workshop where members of the Society quickly cover the basics of waltzing\, polkas and the schottische. \n  \nOur next ball is our Halloween ball\, our largest and most spectacular event of the year. While you can come in semi-formal attire\, Halloween is a chance to shine\, so start finding/making your costume now. And bring your camera\, as there we be all sorts of interesting costumes to be seen. \n  \nNow is the time for cosplay\, historical costumes\, future costumes\, steampunk\, and an array of other costumes. \n  \nOf course\, do bear in mind that the goal is to dance in the costumes\, so make sure you can move and turn without tripping! And no sharp\, pointy parts that might damage the other dancers will be allowed! \n  \nOf course\, the usual 19th\, 20th and 21st century formal wear is always welcome. \nAdmission may be refused for those inappropriately dressed. \nRefreshments are potluck finger food with the Society providing both fruit punch and ice water.”

DESCRIPTION:The Emperor’s Garden Party \nhosted by The Emperor’s Bridge Campaign \nSunday\, September 21\, 2:00-5:00PM \nJefferson Square Park\, Eddy Street at Gough Street\, San Francisco \nSuggested donation $5 Per Adult \nhttp://www.emperorsbridge.org \n  \n“Please join us for The Emperor’s Garden Party! \n  \nEmperor Norton often thought big in September. \n  \nOn Saturday\, September 21\, 1872\, the abolitionist weekly newspaper the Pacific Appeal published the third and final of the Emperor’s three Bridge Proclamations of that year\, in which he called for the design and construction of a great Bay-spanning bridge linking San Francisco and Oakland via Goat Island (present-day Yerba Buena Island) – setting out the vision for what we now know as the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. \n  \nThe Emperor actually had penned that Proclamation a few days earlier\, on the 17th. \n  \nAnd it was exactly 13 years before that – on September 17\, 1859 – that Joshua Abraham Norton had issued his most famous Proclamation of all: the one declaring himself Emperor and signed ‘Norton I\, Emperor of the United States’. \n  \nPlease join The Emperor’s Bridge Campaign in celebrating these two anniversaries – the Emperor’s third Bridge Proclamation (142 years ago) and his imperial self-declaration (155 years ago) – with a lovely\, fun afternoon in the park. \n  \nBring your own picnicking and relaxation accoutrements – savories\, sweets\, liquid refreshments\, blankets\, lawn chairs. \n  \nWe’ll provide a treat – a cupcake! – for everybody. \nA Special Welcome To Kids – We’ve got some fun activities planned! \n  \n2:00-3:15PM: Make Your Own Emperor’s Hat \nStarting at 2:00PM\, we’ll have a hat-making station\, where kids will be shown photos of the Emperor in his beaver hat and will be provided with construction paper\, crayons\, glitter and feathers\, for making making and decorating their own ‘Emperor’s hats’! – with adult assistance\, of course. \n  \n3:15PM: The Emperor’s Story Time \nThe kids will gather round\, in their hats\, to hear Emperor Norton himself – played by Joseph Amster of Emperor Norton’s Fantastic San Francisco Time Machine (Overland Monthly video profile here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h852nCp_rls) – tell his story! \n  \n3:30PM: The Emperor’s Parade \nAfter The Emperor’s Story Time\, Emperor Norton will lead the kids – in their hats! – in a little parade around Jefferson Square Park. \n  \nBONUS!!! Free Walking Tour of Emperor Norton’s Haunts – Led by the Emperor Himself! \nOr at least someone – Joseph Amster of Emperor Norton’s Fantastic San Francisco Time Machine – who doesn’t play Emperor Norton on TV but does play him rather well on the streets of San Francisco. \n  \nOur Garden Party begins at 2:00PM. If you’d like to get an early start on the festivities\, the Emperor’s tour starts: \nSunday\, September 21 at 11:30AM \nat Empire Park\, 642 Commercial Street\, San Francisco. \nEmpire Park was the site of the Eureka Lodgings boarding house\, where the Emperor lived from 1863 until his death in 1880. \n  \nAt the conclusion of the walking tour – which will last about 60-90 minutes – you can join the Emperor for a couple of short bus rides to near Jefferson Square Park\, and get a proper escort to the party!\nHope to see you there!”

The food is all fresh and ethnically authentic. \n  \nGlendi is Greek for party\, and we throw a great one! Take a church tour that explains the meaning behind the structure and iconography of an Orthodox Church and highlights the timeless frescoes that adorn the interior.
