SUMMARY:Madame Gufay's Lovelutionaries
DESCRIPTION:Madame Gufay’s Lovelutionaries \npresented by Actors Ensemble of Berkeley \nFriday-Saturday\, December 12-13 and 19-20\, 8:00PM \nLive Oak Theatre\, 1301 Shattuck Avenue\, Berkeley\, 510-981-6690 \n$20 \nhttp://www.aeofberkeley.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=305:madame-gufays-lovelutionaries&catid=61:at-live-oak \nhttps://www.facebook.com/sogufay \nhttp://gufay.brownpapertickets.com \nhttps://www.facebook.com/pages/Live-Oak-Theatre/215511328513736 \n  \n“Growing up in the French provinces\, Madame Gufay was fascinated by news reports of the Free Speech Movement (the FSM) which fermented on the campus of U.C. Berkeley and resonated worldwide.  Now\, having returned to school late in life\, she has arranged to finish her last semester studying at her own personal mecca\, U.C. Berkeley.  Madame Gufay is a force of nature\, and her wacky\, goofy efforts to experience Free Speech in the present day involve most campus life: the administration and academics\, the classroom\, the library\, Sproul Plaza demonstrations and\, of course graduation. \nMadame Gufay overcomes language challenges\, academic arrogance\, uncontrollable urges\, public drunkenness\, lewd and lascivious behavior\, to the fulfillment of innocent wacky\, goofy dreams. To be sure\, Madame Gufay and her activist Lovelutionaries do care passionately about social justice and they advocate for world peace\, justice\, not to mention lowering tuition for public universities! Madame Gufay’s character is based loosely on the famous director Jacques Tati’s Mr. Hulot who also had hilarious adventures. \nNorah Foster\, the enticing\, engaging and eager retired manager of graduate services at the UC Berkeley Library and new late blooming playwright\, wrote Madame Gufay over a period of years\, incorporating many events that she personally experienced\, as well as plot twists that emanated directly from her vivid imagination. She began working as a volunteer at Actors Ensemble\, and as an experiment on our part we produced her play originally as a workshop/staged reading. It showed enough promise (and Norah enough enthusiasm in helping to get to the next step) that we have taken it upon ourselves to produce it as a full play\, performed over two weekends in December.”

SUMMARY:The Dragon Play
DESCRIPTION:The Dragon Play \nby Jenny Connell Davis \nThursday-Sunday\, November 6-December 21 – extended! \nThursday-Saturday 8:00PM\, Sunday 7:00PM \nImpact Theatre at La Val’s Subterranean\, 1834 Euclid Avenue\, Berkeley\, 510-224-5744 \n$20 in advance\, $25 at the door \nhttp://impacttheatre.com \nhttps://www.vendini.com/ticket-software.html?t=tix&e=4640cdef022039e6c9c82c92156fbf9d \nhttp://www.lavals.com \n  \n“In the frozen north a woman and her husband\, weathering the challenges of their marriage\, receive a mysterious visitor who threatens to upend their world. Decades before and thousands of miles away in the burning south\, an 11-year-old boy and a 300-year-old – yet still relatively adolescent – dragon girl meet and fall in love. Far from fairy tales or airbrushed fantasies\, these two achingly poignant stories alternate in a heart-rending dance of desire\, longing\, and commitment that spans time and geography. The intensity of the ways these characters yearn and fall for each other is like nothing audiences have witnessed on stage\, and the staggering final revelation will stop your heart with its beauty.”

The book documented the life and death of a woman named Margaret Rucker\, born in 1907. He was captivated by this mysterious woman and her tragic story\, captured in sepia images and dark poetry. \nLast year when he introduced her to accordion troubadour Jason Webley\, he learned that not only was Margaret born in Webley’s home town of Everett\, Washington – she was the daughter of one of the town’s founders\, buried in the enigmatic pyramid above the town. \nWebley and Rinaldi assembled some of the best songwriters in the country to write new works inspired by Margaret’s life and writings for a special concert in Everett this past April. As an encore to that sold-out show\, they are bringing the concert back to the place where that scrapbook was found with this show at San Francisco’s beautiful Castro Theatre.”
