SUMMARY:The Totalitarians
DESCRIPTION:The Totalitarians \nA National New Play Network World Premiere by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb \nNovember 19-December 14\, \ncheck website for detailed schedule \nZ Below\, downstairs at Z Space\, 450 Florida Street\, San Francisco \nsee website for ticket details \nhttp://zspace.org/new-work/the-totalitarians \nhttps://web.ovationtix.com/trs/pr/935930 \n  \n“Z Space is thrilled to present the first play commissioned for us by our in-house playwright\, Peter Sinn Nachtrieb. \nWe might be on the brink of revolution in Nebraska. Penny\, a compulsive and compulsively watchable candidate for state office\, enlists the help of Francine\, a silver-tongued operative. Francine’s husband Jeffrey\, a doctor\, is lying to his dying patients – one of whom opens his eyes to Penny’s nefarious plans for the Cornhusker State. The Totalitarians is a raucous dark comedy about the state of modern political discourse\, modern relationships and how easy it is to believe truths without facts.”

Decades before and thousands of miles away in the burning south\, an 11-year-old boy and a 300-year-old – yet still relatively adolescent – dragon girl meet and fall in love. Far from fairy tales or airbrushed fantasies\, these two achingly poignant stories alternate in a heart-rending dance of desire\, longing\, and commitment that spans time and geography. SUMMARY:Puppet Up: Uncensored - The OTHER side of The Jim Henson Company
DESCRIPTION:Puppet Up: Uncensored \nThe OTHER side of The Jim Henson Company \nThursday-Sunday\, November 13-16 and 20-23\, \nThursday-Friday 8:00PM\, Saturday 6:00PM and 9:00PM\, Sunday 7:00PM \nMarines’ Memorial Theater\, 609 Sutter Street\, San Francisco\, 415-673-6672 \nsee website for ticket details \n18+ \nhttp://www.puppetup.com \nhttp://www.marinesmemorialtheatre.com \n  \n“What happens when Henson puppeteers are unleashed? You get a new breed of intelligent nonsense that is Puppet Up: Uncensored – a live\, outrageous\, comedy\, variety show for adults only. Enjoy an unpredictable evening when six talented\, hilarious\, expert puppeteers will improvise songs and sketches based on your suggestions! With a motley group of characters brought to life by the world-renowned puppeteers of The Jim Henson Company\, this is not your average night at the improv and it is definitely not for children. But all others are welcome to enjoy the uninhibited anarchy of live puppet performance as never seen before. \n  \nPuppet Up: Uncensored is a silly\, daring and exciting challenge that has evolved from a small class where our puppeteers could work on their improvising skills. Traditionally\, going back to the earliest appearances my dad did on The Ed Sullivan Show\, The Tonight Show and many others\, our company’s style of puppetry has always involved improvisation. It was quite often true that our funniest moments on set happened after the director yelled cut. Improvising brings a certain energy that is exciting\, irreverent and unique and I wanted to strengthen that comedic voice in our work. \n  \nSo back in 2005 we invited some performers\, fed them pizza\, and hoped for the best. The class was funny and we thought other people might think it was funny too. So we had a little private show and a festival scout was there. The next thing we knew we were no longer a class but a world-traveling troupe of skilled puppeteers who improvise – or skilled improvisers who puppeteer\, whichever you choose. \n  \nPerhaps what has been the most rewarding for us has been how much our audiences have embraced the rebellious anarchic energy that gets unleashed with this show. It can be a little disturbing to see unrequited love between a goat and a fish\, but we find it delicious and surprising and it has been wonderful to have audiences around the world agree with us. \n  \nPerforming in Puppet Up: Uncensored requires us to improvise freely and to let loose our emotional selves. We ask that of the audience too. So when we need suggestions\, open your mind\, release your inhibitions and feel free to shout out the first ridiculous thing that pops in your head. Chances are it is exactly what we’re looking for. \n  \nI guess for a show that is labeled ‘adults only’\, we’re actually quite juvenile. And we’re truly excited to have you come play with us. \n– Brian Henson”

SUMMARY:In And Out Of Shadows
DESCRIPTION:In And Out Of Shadows \nby Gary Soto \npresented by Brava Studio Sessions \nSunday\, November 23\, 2:00PM and 7:00PM \nBrava Theater\, 2781 24th Street\, San Francisco \n$14 \nhttp://brava.org/current-shows/current-shows/and-out-shadows \n  \n“In And Out Of Shadows\, a musical by famed Chicano writer Gary Soto\, is about the lives and experiences of a group of undocumented teenagers from Richmond and Pinole\, California. Very funny\, in a format loosely based on the Canterbury Tales\, members of San Francisco Youth Theatre’s professional ensemble not only perform the play\, but also gathered the oral histories from around the Bay Area on which it is based\, and which Soto has transformed into this vibrant\, musical theater production\, with an original score\, inspired by Mexican Mariachi\, jazz\, and hip hop. \n  \nDirected by Cliff Mayotte (from Voice of Witness) with music by SFYT Director Emily Klion and Bay Area luminary George Brooks. \n  \nAs the teens prepare their personal statements for an AB 540 conference at UC Berkeley (AB 540 allows DREAMers\, as they are known\, to attend school at in-state tuition rates)\, we meet Juan\, who arrived in the US alone via a sewer when he was 13. And Alberto who\, as a determined six-year-old\, was put to sleep with cough syrup during the crossing because he adamantly refused to give his cousin’s name as his own. We watch a newly urbanized vaco loco teaching an undocumented Chinese friend how to speak street Spanish.  Running through everything is the fear of deportation. Many families in the show have mixed status – undocumented parents whose documented children were born here\, for example – who live in constant fear of family separation.  The diverse group of young actors\, many of whom are directly affected by the issue\, mix English\, Spanish\, Tagalog\, Spanglish and other languages as they unfold the unwieldy human effects of this messy political issue. \n  \nIn and Out of Shadows was developed in 2012 with Dave Egger’s Voice of Witness oral history program and Marsh Youth Theater\, with support from the Creative Work Fund. The show premiered at The Marsh in 2013. This production is supported by the Fresno Regional Foundation\, The California Endowment\, and Brava Theater. \n  \nGary Soto is a nationally acclaimed poet and novelist of young adult fiction. Born and raised in the farm community of Fresno\, he has a keen personal interest in Latino youth and first-hand knowledge of the challenges facing low-income immigrant populations\, from whose lives he draws extensively in his stories. The blend of humor and Spanglish vernacular in his fiction has captured the largest readership of Latino youth in the nation. His books have been translated into five languages and sold nearly four million copies\, with 48 million textbooks featuring his writings. He currently lives in Berkeley. \n  \nSan Francisco Youth Theatre is directed by youth theatre dynamo\, Emily Klion. Based at Brava Theater and Red Poppy Art House\, SFYT ensembles are extremely diverse in race\, class\, ability\, national origin\, sexual orientation and\, most significantly to this project\, immigration status. SFYT provides musical theater education and performance opportunities for youth without regard to financial circumstance or past experience. In and Out of Shadows is SF Youth Theatre’s premiere performance. \n  \nFresno City College\, founded in 1910\, is California’s first junior college and now serves more than twenty thousand fulltime and part-time students. Gary Soto is an alumnus of the college; the Gary Soto Literary Museum is located in the campus’s Old Administration Building and attracts school age children\, college students\, and tourists.”

The intensity of the ways these characters yearn and fall for each other is like nothing audiences have witnessed on stage\, and the staggering final revelation will stop your heart with its beauty.”

Directed by Evren Odcikin\, Faulted is an ode to California in all its mysterious\, tectonic plate shifting contradictions. Epic and roman\, vegan and carnivore\, West Side and the Central Valley combine under the signs of the next Big One\, looming just under the horizon. \nThe mighty San Andreas Fault has woken up and set his eyes on Los Angeles\, home to an earth empath named Aurora. Sitting in her trailer\, Aurora can hear and sometimes see seismic activity before it registers on the finely tuned scientific instruments at nearby Caltech. Mitch\, a graduate student at Caltech’s Seismological Laboratory\, has been sent to collect data about Aurora. Their meeting turns out to be much more than a collision between worlds of science and New Age belief. Attended by a chorus of godlike figures embodying California’s fault lines\, Aurora must convince Mitch to trust her predictions before it’s too late.”

Metamorphosis features performers from the U.S.\, Russia\, France\, and Mongolia\, in an array of classical circus artistry such as clowning\, juggling\, acrobatics and equestrianism (with completely animal-friendly acts). \nFounded in 1977\, The Big Apple Circus introduced American audiences to the intimate environment of a one-ring circus under a Big Top Tent. Since its inception\, Big Apple Circus has produced thirty-six original shows\, each created around a specific theme integrating aspects of traditional theater (original music compositions\, lighting\, choreography\, sets and costumes) with classical circus artistry. A small core company of performers returns each year with new acts and are joined by guest artists selected from the top ranks of international circus stars.”
