“Kids of all ages are in for a treat as Octopretzel takes over the stage with music, puppets and theatrics in our perennially popular Silly Sundays series of kids’ shows. A wide array of top family-oriented artists provides engaging entertainment for young children and parents every Sunday afternoon through October, playing music from around the world for dancing, jumping, and spinning on the best dance floor in the East Bay!
Featured on the Live at Ashkenaz, Volume 2: Kids! CD, and a longtime Silly Sundays favorite, the wildly imaginative Octopretzel returns to delight a young audience with its colorful and inspired performance. An Octopretzel show features handmade puppets, bubbles of all sizes, and at times hula-hooping kindergartners. The band, four of whose members are parents, has been known to inspire spontaneous kiddie mosh-pits while still maintaining focus and interactive participation. The songwriting presents imagery of things such as spinning tops, roly-polies, and whimsical imaginary creatures.
Lead singer and guitarist Melita Silberstein is Octopretzel’s creator, a former preschool teacher who is now a music specialist for youngsters. She has performed in a number of bands and recorded solo albums. Singer David Doostan is an East Bay emergency room doctor. Lead singer and guitarist Jen Miriam Kantor, a former member of the Sippy Cups and founder of the Puppet Players, sings and plays percussion (by day she’s a doula, artist, and puppeteer). Mandolinist and fiddler David Rosenfeld has worked with the Oakland Symphony and plays in klezmer band Kugelplex. Today’s special guest is Vir McCoy, from Ashkenaz favorites Dogon Lights and Hamsa Lila.”
