“How can an understanding of psychological type support us when we engage with people who are unhelpful, defensive, or simply lacking in integrity? What does it feel like when we ourselves behave in these problematic ways? We will apply Beebe’s eight-function, eight-archetype model of psychological type to explore what is happening when we tangle with people who seem to have a special knack for driving us crazy. Illustrating with examples from his own experience and from situations volunteered by participants, Adam will illuminate the archetypes and functions at play, addressing the meaning disguised in these situations and suggesting a new approach to confronting them. The course will focus on the usefulness of learning to recognize failures of integrity, illustrating how such failures can make us problematic to engage with. We will practice analyzing such failures typologically and explore how our entanglements with problematic people can help us identify where we ourselves need to grow.
