“In the beginning, in the ‘long ago’, Tuwapongtumsi married Sootukwnanagw. They were the Earth and the Sun. The Creatrix and the Light. The Sand Altar Maiden and the Star god. Their intercourse and their climax brings rain to all living things. The fluids produced by their passions are the fertilizing nectar of all of life.
The Hopi Peoples are descended from the Anasazi. Today, many live on the Hopi Indian Reservation in modern Arizona. They are known in the United States as Pueblo Peoples because they lived in villages upon their contact with Spanish intruders on their continent. Then they were both farmers and herders of small animals such as sheep. One can imagine how important water and rainfall were to people who depended upon the falling water for the survival of their crops and their animal herds.
Tuwapongtumsi is known to some as Mother Earth Herself, an understanding that derives from sum of the parts of Her name. Tuwa means sand, pong means display, and tumasi means female. To others She is Sand Altar Womyn or Sand Altar Maiden. She is the nurturer of all living things and the Mother of all plants. She brings life to the smallest mosses, the prettiest flowers, and the tallest trees. She brings life to us.
As our Winter/wet season approaches in the Bay Area, we humbly and graciously gather at the altar of Tuwapongtumsi, She who is the Goddess of all Moist Elements of Life. In so doing we acknowledge Her importance and we give praise and thanks to Her for every molecule of water that She shares with us through Her pleasure. It is water that bonds all living things and through our water: our sweat, our blood, our tears, and our own passionate offerings of a sexual nature, we are Her daughters.
For the altar please bring a blue or green candle. Also please bring a small container/bottle of water collected from the geographic area in which you live: the sacred water that sustains your body and that of your community – the water that you bathe in, drink, water your plants with, and feed to your animals.
We look so forward to circling with you!
If you are interested in participating in a ritual or celebration, please help out by doing the following:
Please bring a snack to share (if possible, food of the culture we are celebrating), washable eating utensils (bowl, cup, plate, utensils, etc. In honor of Mother Earth, we do not provide disposable items), a candle (for safety reasons, we highly recommend a candle in a glass container, often called a novena), and pillow or chair to sit on to all rituals. For more information about our rituals please visit our FAQ page.
Please see our current series schedule and check the web page for the specific ritual to see what items to bring and how to prepare yourself. Please take the time to read this, especially if you are a newcomer. New information is added from time to time so even if you feel you have already seen this, it is important to check back in every now and then.”
