“Each burial plot tells a story about a family; join us to discover the past and connect to the present.
Family Legacy Day has been created as a way to honor, celebrate, and reconnect families who have ancestors buried in these grounds. Special events will include honoring the Evergreen Family of the Year, demonstrations on safely cleaning grave markers, stone rubbings, and the repairing of broken tombstones. There will also be available the tools needed to develop a family tree for those interested, and those with family buried at Evergreen will be encouraged to tell their ancestor’s stories orally so that they can be added to the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History’s archives. In addition, hard copies of the location of all the plots and names of the people buried at Evergreen will be accessible, as well as someone to help find specific plots.
This Family Legacy Day we will be honoring the Jones Family, brothers Albert and Rholandus and their mother, Mary.
While attending, visitors will be able to see the grounds keeping and preservation work that is being done by many local volunteers and the Homeless Service Center, which sends us a team of volunteers every week.*
Legacy Day will feature a Pop Up Museum with the theme being objects and photos related to Evergreen Cemetery or the people buried there. The Pop Up Museum is a temporary exhibit created by the people who show up to participate. It works by choosing a theme and venue and then inviting people to bring an object on-topic to share. If you have a historical photo or object that relates to Evergreen Cemetery please bring it and put it on display! We need you (and your objects/photos) to make this work!
Come make new friends, run into old friends, and learn about families rooted here in Santa Cruz; everyone is welcome.
*For those who want to arrive early, from 10:00AM until noon, volunteers will be restoring some historic tombstones. The public is invited to observe our volunteers hard at work as they restore our cemetery.”
